IBANEZ ARTCORE TONE PROBLEM SOLVED !!!

So, i decided to replace my artcore pickup and found a handmade pickup shop in São Paulo/Brazil who make soap bar pickups that i've heard good things about, and the measurements are exactly the same as the stock artcore pickup. There are two different specs for this model, neck and bridge. Given the artcore's pickup position, which would better suited for the instrument?

In the beginning of the thread Bassmatic mentioned that he put a bartolini neck soap bar pickup on the artcore with good results. Did you choose the neck pickup just because it was easier available or some other circumstantial reason, or is where you going for a specific sound?

I tried the Bartolini because I like their sound. However, I found that the stock pickups worked very well when the pots were changed to the proper value, as mentioned in the early post. Please note that this fix is ONLY for the bass with a single pickup. I have not checked the 2 pickup basses to see if they have the same problem.

Great thread, I have the ASB-140 and all the pieces, just need to find the time to do the mod. I also have the ASB-180 and will check the values on it's pups and see if this mod is applicable to it.
I also picked up a Epi EB-0 as I do prefer short-scale basses and always like inexpensive toys I can mod and not worry about the value of them. I plan to add a neck pickup and a heavier, simpler bridge to give it better balance, but plan to keep the original neck "mudbucker". This thing measures out at 1.2kOhm on my multimeter, so I am guessing it is a good candidate for the 50k pots too. The original pots were 500k too, so I am guessing that is part of the problem with this bass. I love the looks of a SG-style bass and think with a better control set and a second pickup it can be much more versatile without the crazy neck dive of the longer scale brother EB-3.
Do you (Bassamatic) agree with my logic for changing out the neck pots on this bass? The bridge pickup that I plan to use measures out at 9.3kOhm, do you think I should use 500k or 250k pots with that one? I have a ton of pots around, in all three measurements, so I would respect your advice before I start to putting things together (why learn the hard way, no need to continue to make the same mistakes others have in the past). Thanks for any help you care to offer.

I`m picking up a stock AGB 140 today. I was reading this thread for a while and I couldn`t find any before/after clips or vids. I did however find a stock wiring schematic for it (It`s in German but I hope it helps out anyway). How does the stock pickup compare to a tv jones? Cheers

I can't make a fair comparison, but I can say from experience that TV Jones pickups are as good as the hype.

The Schematic i posted doesn't show impendance, only replacement order nr. I'll do a short video on the stock bass this weekend and update it as I mod it. I just got it home and I'm doing a rough set up now, so it will be ready for the recording. I'm hoping that the stock pickup does't suck but I have some others in mind if it does(TV Jones Nordstrand, Seymour D.)

No - the stock pickup does not suck at all, and sounds much better after the pots are changed to the proper value to work with it. If you are determined to change the pickup then leave the pots as they are.

Maybe at first, but IIRC, the stock pots are cheap little no-namers. New pots and caps could be a nice upgrade with a new pup.

As it happens. I just dropped my AGB-140 at the tech today for new pots, but not for the same reason as most on this thread. I had as much problem with the look (the Mini MM pup does not match the vintage look of the bass) as the tone on mine. As I posted a few years back I managed to snag a JC pup and harness from a guy who DS'd his Artcore, but mine had the common problem of a huge drop-off in the first bit of the volume knob and almost no effect with the tone knob til you got to the end of the turn. I've put up with it til now, but I'm very much in a only-keep-gear-that-is-great mindset so they're going to try and get the controls fully functional with a new set of pots and proably a new cap as well.
Fingers crossed...

Gorgeous! Please be sure that if you are replacing the pots and keeping the same pickup you need to change the value of the pots as described above. If you don't you will continue to have the same issues with the same strange behavior of the pots.

Don't be put off if the pots are "no-name. Many makers buy the pots in large quantities from some major maker and they may not be marked. For example, one of the best pot makers is T-Mec, and the pots are not marked.
Please be sure that you understand that the pots and the cap CANNOT change the sound quality as long as they are working properly.

Today I finished with the set up and got some flatwounds on it. The recordings were made with Stock AGB 140, going direct into Scarlet 6i6. You can hear the difference between Roundwound and Flatwound strings with Finger and Plectrum picking but the tone control, as predicted, does`t do much.

I was referring to the pots in the JC harness. I don't even remember what the values of the pots are/were. I'm just hoping the tech will be able to come up with a combination of posts and caps that works.

May of 2010 this thread was started, I purchased my AFB200 in the summer of 2016. The bass has this problem. I’ve ordered the parts. I do like the liner taper for tone but it’s not a big deal, I can live with an Audio in that position.

I was a bit confused by the .22 capacitor but I assumed it was .22uF.

I can’t believe that Ibanez hasn’t dealt with this problem.

Thanks for posting the solution, I was just starting the task of figuring it out when I came across this thread in a search. My Mandolin player, a friend and State Park Ranger out at the S.P. I'm a volunteer at, got me to attend the "Song Farmers" Circle that gets together the first Sat. of the month. I've attended two of these with my Martin 00015S acoustic guitar. The facilitator, a semi-retired pro, pulled me aside to tell me how he appreciated another good guitar player in the circle, the idea is to get new and shy players together to have some fun and spread the music. This Florida Park sponsors the Florida Folk Festival, the Old Time Music Festival, a Dulcimer Retreat and a bunch of smaller music related events.

I told Skip I appreciated his complement but I was actually a bass player. I mentioned something about the oldtime music 1,4 1,5 bass lines that seem to be in the majority for most of the tunes and if I tried to play the upright in my style, I'd wreck my hands in about 15 minutes "o) They actually played "Stand by Me" and the bass player was doing the 1,4 1,5 thing, I didn't recognize the tune until the vocals. I couldn't let it go, when everyone was packing up I got into a discussion with the bass player, he let me play his upright and I had to set the universe back in balance by running through the Stand by Me bass line, some standards don't fair well with the 1,4 1,5 progressions.

Skip asked me To bring a bass for the next get together, I get the feeling he is auditioning me for his group, from the way he talked and Brownie, my mando player, bragging about my skills. Anyhow the old Guild B-50 will not cut through the dozen or so dreads, mandos, banjos and fiddles. The circle usually has 20 or more musicians and 75 to 200 in the audience. The Ibanez was purchased just for this type of situation, since I would have to be amplified anyway I think the AFB won't look as out of place as my standard electrics. At least until the crowd gets used to me. There are a couple of guys playing home made instruments, I can take that option too, funky home made stuff is Mountain Music Chic. I'm fairly new to playing this kind of music. Remember Martin Mull in his early stand up comedy days, he actually sat in a lounge chair with an end table and lamp like he was in his living room, and played his banjo. I'm considering building a light weight end table that will fit right over my 40 watt Fender Rumble too keep up apperences "o)

Sorry for rambling, thanks again for the info.

Glad your artcore has worked out for you.
My 140 has been getting a good bit of mileage in my country duo. I bring it and my P-bass to every gig. I finally ended up with 1k amp pots. Still has some drop-off but not as much and it sounds very good.

I'm currently looking at fixing the last thing I don't like about the Artcore, the cheezy non-vintage looking Artcore logo. I'm thinking of buying a Western Bolo with an "I" in it, chopping off the loop and gluing it to the headstock.

Just for fun I might put shotgun caps over the knobs also...

"o) Yeah, what do they call that "Mother of Toilet Seat" inlay. I've been taking the AFB200 to rehearsals lately, I'm running it through the SansAmp BDDI into the old SWR Studio 220 & Goliath 4X10. I can pretty much dial in any tone I want with that set up. The parts for the upgrade should be in by the end of the week. The vintage distress on this bass is kind of rediculous, but it looks more like wormwood than Road wear, I can tolerate it, even though it does have frets. I can always pull out the Guild Starfire "o)

The 140's (First Gen, long scale, single pickup) don't even have the MoTS, they just have a modern looking paint/decal logo that's under the clearcoat so it'd be a hassle to remove it.

It was tempting to just take some MEK to he headstock face and refinish, but why pass up the chance to instead add a little bling to the headstock?
