Ibanez Bass problems

Hi guys,
I own an Ibanez iceman icb300ex, and so far, it has done me well, a highly versatile and playable bass. however recently, it has been playing up a bit. whenever I play hard in a drop tuning, (either D standard or drop C#) there is a horribly low, growly, distasteful distortion. It is active, and I had similar problems before, but I changed the battery and the problem went. but I have changed the battery and it has not changed this time. i have also lubricated the pots. I play through a Peavey max 115, but i have DI'ed through my guitarists mixer with a boss limiter/enhancer, and encountered the same problem, even with software compression added. I rely on the bass for recording and gigging, so I need to get it fixed, and I am pretty skint as I have ordered the sterling stingray ray 34 bass. So any suggestions of what is wrong and how I can fix it would be much appreciated.

Sorry for such a delayed reply, but that is most likely an issue of pick-up height. If your pick-ups are too close to your low strings, those big fat wavelengths can just overdrive the **** out of them and cause you problems like crazy. I had that problem with the low B on my six string, and just bringing the pick-up height down eliminated the problem. Similarly, my anemic high C became much more balanced when I raised it.

Also, as a guitarist and bassist, I can say that there are just some basses and guitars that handle downtuning much better than others. That being said, Ibanez typically handles downtuning better than other electric basses like fender or gibson...

The pickup height can be an issue. I'd check that out.

Does it have the same problem when you record direct? It may be the amp you're playing through.
