A real review on the 7 will be a little slow in coming - it's technically a christmas present, and my wife locked the case and took the key.
But I know where she put it.
Quick comments:
It just isn't that hard to adapt to. I play 4s and 5s, and have a lot of time on a tenor 5 as well. Adding a C and a F up top does create a more confused view of the fretboard, but I'll get used to it quickly enough.
Spacing is tight at the bridge, much tighter than I'd generally prefer, but for a 7 string I'm happy with it - it lets you traverse the strings much more easily than more conventional spacing, and helps chording, which is one of the main reasons I wanted so many strings. At the nut, spacing is moderate - not a P, but not a J, which is right where I like it, and certainly part of what makes playing it feel so natural.
As it stands now, the neck is quite flat and the action is moderate. Buzzes a bit when digging in, low effort playing all around the neck. The kind of action you don't think about till after you set it down...it just works. Frets are consistently leveled, no high spots evident, and adequately finished. They're a little squarer/sharper than I prefer, but clean. Also worth noting is the fret size - much smaller than the typical Ibanez or the more normal medium jumbo. Not vintage small, between vintage and jumbo. Probably a concession to the thin strings...so far I quite like the feel.
Strings are 130-020, the .020 is a plain guage. I'd like to find a wound string to replace it when the time comes, but Circle K doesn't offer anything small enough to get to the medium/low tension I prefer when tuned to F or even E.
Does anyone know of the DM SR2000 7 set includes a wound F string?
Electronics are the same as found in the Grooveline basses - humbucking J blade pickups mated to a 3 band with much more subtle eq contours that found on most preamps, with an active passive switch. Passive, it sounds like a smooth, punchy Jazz family member, with thick lows and useful, even highs. Not too much thunder, not too glassy. Active, the preamp adds a little color, extending the high end response and adding a little sizzle. The controls are really useful. In contrast with an OBP-3, for example, you can actually use the bass knob without strangling your tone or farting out your amp. Treble control is a nice zing tamer/booster, and the mid knob takes you from jazzy/middy/burpy to scooped, clear slappy sounds. I do miss the mid frequency knob my old BTB had.
All in all, a really musical package, and I'm looking forward to expanding my musical horizons with it.
