I like the timbre of notes high up the neck, so I'm still approaching the bass aspect of my playing from that direction. I think the C string is going to be used mostly for chordal accompaniment and soloing in a non-bass vein. At least that's how I'm picturing it at the moment. And yes, the temptation is to play across the fingerboard rather than up and down it.

I haven't spent a lot of time playing this bass through my setup (or any setup), but I can say that the TC RS cabinets sound very clean and transparent to my ears. The head is a Trickfish Bullhead 1k, and I love it. It's got gobs of headroom and it's just super clean. The tone circuitry is based on the Michael Pope FlexCore and was designed by Mike Pope and David Yates. I can't say enough good about it. Mike and Dave both play Fodera 6-strings through it with the Trickfish cabinets.

I can appreciate that. It's very personal. My main acoustic weighs all of 4 pounds 1 ounce. The padded strap I use on it is fairly light weight too at 8oz but I find it less comfortable than the straight 3.5" plain strap. Same thing with my basses. I guess it's the way it forms to the shoulder. While there is only 1/2 or so difference between the widthe of these straps there are definitely more pressure points on my shoulder with the padded one. My collarbone doesn't protrude upward so it doesn't come in contact with any pressure, but the top of my shoulder supports all the weight.

Interesting conversation, no?

I gave my two 410 cabinets and Ampeg head to my son. My back is a mess, so I'm trying to do more with less. If it's a loud gig, I stack an RS210 on an RS212 in a line array and it works very well.

Was finally able to weigh the 846 and it's 10 lbs even. Feels like it when I pick it up off the stand but wearing it feels lighter.

Had to work on the low side of the frets a little as the super wide board made the angles a little sharp-ish. Plays great all the way to the nut now. Still digging the tone lots. Glad I kept it.

I've kinda fallen in love with the BH-2 p'ups in the 846. They're growly and clear and I love them bunches. Cuz I can still use the ICE pre to dial up my usual P bass, upright, Jaco horn, and slappity-slap tone.

Disregarding the mfr's ad copy and differences in how we percieve tone ... can anyone say with reasonable authority what aftermarket p'ups sound similar enough that I can buy four pairs of them and be dileriously happy till I eventually die in a nursing home ... dreaming about how awesome all my basses sounded?

I feel your pain. I know how difficult it is to transition to a 5 string, so I can't imagine what adding a C would do to one's brain at first when you don't have time to think- only play.

Puremusic, we have the same bass, but I never heard about the pickups being installed in the wrong positions.

I have always thought that they were not exactly the same pickups, but voiced slightly differently, because when either is soloed, they sound like different pickups, not the same pickup in different locations.

I said this in a review years ago at Harmony Central. I'll look for the review later.

I did read once that Gibson did this, installed the pickups in the wrong positions on some Les Pauls to get a different sound.

I was just playing mine last night, and love it! :hyper:
