It's funny that we both had Cirrus basses first. Bill did voice the pickups differently he stated that the neck was voice brighter than the the bridge pickup. Ibanez flipped them because they wanted the deeper voiced pick up on the neck and brighter voiced on the bridge. I am going to find a link to the article and I will post it. I believe if you flipped them they will be closer to the sound of MTD

Did you use your Cirrus (5 string I presumed?) as your main prior owning the BTB846SC?

I thought those who have been familiar with the low B string wouldn't have such hard time adjusting to 6 or even 7 string bass, cause when playing these basses we view the strings from the top where we see the same the low B on top. At least it didn't happen to me when bought my first 6 string bass after played 5 string only for 22+ years, nor a couple of years later when I got the BTB 7 string.

The new thing to me was learning to mute more strings of which I couldn't use my fretting hand thumb to mute the low B by grasping the neck as I some times could on my 5.

That's how I've been voicing the pups on my Alembic, with the bridge darker and pulling highs off the neck pup.

Muting and such isn't the problem I'm having, luckily. I can get around the instrument physically just fine (relatively speaking), but when I'm in a situation where I have to think about what I'm playing I kind of loose track. I know the fingerboard well from a sounds standpoint, but mostly I can't tell you what I'm doing because it's all in my head and I'm not thinking of note names. I need to work on that if I'm going to be playing charts. My main bass has been my Lakland 5502 fretless, which is a delightful instrument in every regard.

I had an opportunity yesterday to play a set through a Trickfish Bullhead .5k head (700 watts I think) and a vertically-stacked pair of their 210 cabinets. OMG it was high-fidelity and smooth from top to bottom. The lows were just *there* with zero boominess, all the way down to B, and it really highlighted just how even the BTB846SC is across the full range of the instrument.

My current bass is a btb 846, about to put some la Bella dtfs on, the stock nyxls are going dead on me. Thunderous tones when I plug it into my acoustic and use the sansamp. Also slowly expanding my pedalboard as budget allows. Hard to stave off GAS with a munchkin here and one on the way. No regrets getting that bass. Might buy another one to get it defretted.

On Monday evenings I administer a jazz jam downtown. Attendance can vary widely, but usually there are two of us there to play bass. It's morphed into a situation where we actually both play at the same time, taking turns with the bass duties and comping higher up on the neck. It's been extremely educational and informative for me, and just a lot of fun as well. In addition to trading roles, Eric and I usually take turns on each other's instruments. I think that's healthy as well. Monday he spent some time shredding on the BTB and I was able to listen to it out front for a bit. Man, that's a nice sounding instrument! Jim, the drummer, is a North Texas State grad, and absolutely brings it. So much fun.

Thanks. I think it's beautiful as well. I can't really speak to how the lack of a cutaway affects either the sound or the weight, as there are of course so many variables there. It's not overly heavy, and it sounds great with plenty of fundamental and a very even neck.

There doesn’t seem to be a lot of info here about the BTB846SC. I just ordered one and should have it soon. I’m guessing that everyone here with them will tell me how much they like them, but comments would be welcome. I have violated my Ibanez policy for this single cut. It’s just so beautiful to me. I played one of the 5 string double cuts today and liked the tone. The 35 inch scale has me intrigued. I play 34.5 scales on my other 6’s and I’m hoping this will give me even more balanced feel. I’ll post some photos once I get it.

Mine just feels great. Unplugged, it just feels and sounds all there. Plugged-in, of course, it's all there. I've got a couple of other very nice instruments against which it must compete for affection, and it represents itself very well.

I agree... it does seem to fair very well against the others in terms of tone. I won't fully have understand until I play it in the mix, but so far I like it. The craftsmanship does seem to be better than other Ibby's I've played thus far and at a minimum the electronics seem correct.

More to come and some photos when I get a chance. It doesn't seem like there is a number giver-outer :), no biggie there, but it is nice to know others with the same type instrument.

Agreed... They do sound really good. Part of me is happy about that and part of me is not. :D Is that wrong? And, I don't know what I would change them to at this point anyway.
