Ibanez sr885 and my new Ibanez btb 745, both were used, that I got for Christmas. I knew going in that the massive increase to spring spread was going to be like starting over. To my shock I didnt even notice because I was able to play it for a bit I picked up some new strings because I was expecting to need them.
The 885 was never set up correctly and that will be fixed in couple weeks. The 745 was spot on with intonation right out of the box. Its going to take a minute to learn what the knobs do specifically on the new bass so for time being I playing every thing on 50% or flat. I didnt even notice the additional 3mm between the strings at the bottom of fret board. The 885 is no slouch and plays nice with a decent tone on new strings. The curve on the back of the neck just seems to give me more finger over the strings without stress. I seldom use my pinky to play until I played the 745. On the 745 the fret board is supper flat nut to tail with a low action that doesnt get fret buzz! Im going to see if my local shop can set up the old one like the new bass.
Ive been playing it now for a good amount of hours . With the strings being where they are I can finally play with my pinky. Its actually pretty easy. Probably due to the combination of set up and strings. I have no idea what strings came on it or how old they are but it sounds pretty good. DAddario makes strings, NYXL, that are recommended for this bass. Im guessing these could possibly be them, dont know. I think Ill play them for a while anyhow. I have DR chrome wound light strings on 885.
So overall in a few days I really like what Im seeing. Having played for so many years I can typically tell if its a match with me or not pretty quick after playing basses others bring to jams or performances and I try them out with a different set up. Thats why this one right out of the box is impressive. I did a "home" set up on the 885 but was waiting till i had this one open to take them both down. Now I have a target .
