Ibanez Ergodyne best bass for low price: Best bass of 1998-Bass player Magazine

My EDC 710. Anyone else have one of these? I don't think I've ever met anyone else who had one.

Yea... this thread is back from the dead.

I just played one of these Ergos a couple of hours ago at my local GC. I really like it despite the thin SR style neck. Anyone looking for a bass that sounds like an ATK but with a thin neck should try this baby out... $289.

I just purchased that same Ibanez EDC 710 matte gold bass you were talking about from Louisville, Kentucky, for only $179! I am currently awaiting its arrival! I will post a review, and put up some youtube vids of what it can do! I am excited to hear the range of the electronics, and what the different coil tapping options can do for slap and double handed tapping! :bassist:

Well, got the bass. I put some Dunlop 45-105's on it, adjusted the truss rod (that was way out of wack! Had NEVER been adjusted!), and cleaned the thing up. I must say, THERE IS NO ODOR that people keep mentioning! I even checked the control cavity! NO ODOR! Sounds like more gossip that we see all too often on the net.... Also, the preamp is DAMN FINE! And I have owned Music Man basses, other Ibanez, some Japanese Edwards and Yamaha, as well as an Taiwan made Yamaha RBX 765A. The Yamaha RBX Pre-amp had nothing on this one.

It does hum depending on the 3 way switch position, but it runs 2 humbuckers in parallel in one housing according to the description, and then splits two of the coils for the center position. Sounds good, electronics were wired well. Body is structurally very good, I would say far more sturdy than a Cort Curbow (which I have had many experiences with, and is the only other Luthite Bass line I have tried).

The bass was made in 2002 in Korea. Neck is thinner than a low end, or MIM Fender Jazz, but still has a C Shape to it. Not very heavy, and I cannot stree how incredibly comfortable this bass is to hold and play!

Down-sides: Matte finish will become a bit shiny with extended use (where fingers rest regularly of course. This one's neck is quite broken in and slick :p ). Tuners needed a LOT of adjustment, but are standard fair, and wuite easy to replace if need be. They are holding tune just fine now, after being adjusted and tightened. Battery cover was poorly devised, but this has been addressed in otehr posts.

All in all, I think this thing deserves almost NONE of the hate that many purists and traditionalists are giving it. I understand looking up to the instruments of the past, but come on guys! We are NOT having a pissing contest here! Enjoy what is comfortable, sounds best, and gets the job done! I swear.... so much hate on TB forums....

I received the bass today. I set it up with Dunlop 45-105's, and cleaned it up. Truss rod needed a LOT of adjusting, as it seems to have mostly never been done. Pickup wiring is very clean, and quiet. Bass was made in 2002, in Korea. Matte Gold in color.

Seems that there is a gasoline like odor coming from the control cavities, but this is only when I put my face very close to the bass. I did NOT notice it until I removed the covers for the control, and battery compartments. Material inside (underneath finish) is the famous orange/yellow color associated with Luthite. Bass sustains just fine, despite negative comments from other owners (sustain issues are often a set-up issue, and has little to NOTHING to do with materials! Craftsmanship is another thing. I think this is more Traditionalist hate speaking regarding the material insecurities....). Pre-amp outdoes Yamaha RBX 765A in regards to output level, and adjustability of tone. Neck is well made, and is thinner than a low end or MIM Fender Jazz Bass. Neck is VERY comfortable, as is the body shape. I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH! Very light, well balanced on a strap, and comfortable.

Sound is very easily adjustable, and versatile depending on what you prefer. There is no mid EQ adjustment, so those looking for very mid-heavy sounds are out of luck, this bass is a bit bright with new strings, and heavy on the low end, acoustically and through an amp. I think that calling it "modern" in tone is relative, and sounds like traditionalist bias. I have played a 70s MM Stingray, and found that to still sound comparable to modern active basses. I see no point in using that term here. Overall, the timbre of the material is that of acrylic or plastic, but muted. It has a soft thud that does not resonate. The jury is still out on whether or not that matters in an instrument with Active Electronics though. Many Luthiers will say the material matters little in an active bass. I have to agree, after trying many with the same electronics, but different materials.

Congrats on your new (to you) Ergodyne. I really enjoy my 1998 EDB605, though I sometimes wish that Luthite wasn’t such a dense material. My Ergodyne is definitely the heaviest of all my basses, but that rarely poses a problem unless I’m playing an exceptionally long gig. Glad to hear that yours is relatively lightweight.

Thank you for the kind words! It is true that the older EDB's were pretty heavy. I have had a chance to play one, and yeesh! Compared to an Ash bodied Stingray in weight!

This EDC is pretty light overall, but still weighs the same as a normal Ibanez SDGR SR bass or so and the EDA I tried before was so so weight, not too bad.

Thank you once again for the kind words! I am new here, and have been loving it so far!

I have a 2006 Ergodyne and it has been my main bass sense then. It is the most well constructed bass I have played. The neck is very smooth and easy to navigate, it seldom goes out of tune (I tune it once a week), I have never had to adjust the truss rod or have ever had a bow in the neck. I have not in any way customized the bass unless you count changing the strings lol. The only problem I have ever had with this bass is the connection to the instrument cable input tends to break easily. This can be fixed by some simple soldering. The tone of the active pickups in my opinion is best for a slap style of playing and to my ears they really lack in punch and the low end. Over all I would rate this bass a 9/10
