My Girlfriend got me a Ibanez GSR200 for Christmas. I was apprehensive at first as I've only really ever played fender or fender style basses. But after picking this thing up and playing it for the past couple of weeks I have to say I love the way this bass feels and plays. It's light it's got a small fast neck and is all around a very comfortable bass. With that said while I love the way it feels I don't really like the way it sounds. It's very twangy and lacks depth especially on the bottom end. So I'm thinking of changing out the pickups. All my other basses are passive and I'm not very educated when it comes to a bass with active electronics. I've seen a lot of other threads of people suggesting emg pj and pjx pups for the GSR200. But I kind of feel like putting $180 pups in a $200 bass is a bit of overkill. The part of the bass that actually makes it active is the preamp right? The pickups themselves are still passive? So pups like the emg pjx that are labeled as active are like that because they come with a preamp? So if I just got some cheaper say DiMarzio or SD passive pickups would they
work with the stock Ibanez preamp that's already in place? And if so would changing the pups actually improve the sound if I'm not changing out the preamp?
This bass is probably going to be more of a practice/play at home bass. I'll more than likely stick with my fender for gigs but the lightweight playability of the GSR will definitely come in handy for those 3 hour practice/writing sessions with my band or just sitting on the couch plucking around. So I don't need anything that's super nice just looking for a more pleasant well rounded tone.
