Ibanez Paul Gray PGB1 Basses

Of all the basses I see for sale on this site, Reverb, and local Craigslist postings, I have never seen an Ibanez Paul Gray PGB1 bass for sale. Shortly after I bought my first bass, a Silvertone P Bass package, I wanted to get a second bass to play with and loved the look of the PGB1s. My local shop didn't carry them, and I really didn't have the money for one anyway, so I picked up a Ibanez SRX 300 and tuned it to BEAD. I've since picked up a Squier VM 70's jazz that's also tuned BEAD and really don't need another bass (I have 9 total), but these always appealed to me. If I could find one in either color I'd be tempted to pick it up, but one in that wine red color would be something I couldn't pass up. Were these just made in extremely limited quantities or does no one really want them? Either way, they seem like a very rare find. Does anyone have any experience with these?

I'm not sure his sig is much different than a regular 4 string ATK like you posted @ODDBALL ...aside from the inlays and factory BEAD tuning. Obviously, the tuning can be changed easily with new strings and the inlays don't change anything aside from the appearance. I haven't seen anything stating that the hardware or electronics are any different so any ATK tuned BEAD is probably exactly the same except for the color and inlays.

You are certainly correct on these basses not being very common. I think I've only seen one for sale in all of my years of browsing around, and it was just within the past few weeks. It was going for quite a pretty penny (I swear it was going for at least 2 grand).

I've never seen one in person and never saw one for sale in any online venue. I don't know what these sold for when they were new nor do I know what they go for on the used market. They had to be made for a very limited time...add to that the popularity of the band and his early death...and a high price tag sounds about right!

Any idea which model of ATK the signature is based off of, or doesn't really matter?
I honestly dont know but if it helps there was a Passive version that I believe was the ATK100 and ATK105, then the active version was the ATK300/ATK305. There was an ATK500 that has a Koa top but that was the only different. Then there were the American made versions that I believe fell under the Prestige name. Dollar to dollar if I were buying one, Id grab an ATK300 since the control cavity is already there and then keep the stock pickup but swap the preamp for a Bart NTMB.
FWIW Ive owned two 300's and a 500. Theyre fairly cumbersome but the sound and feel is awesome for the money. They truly were a stingray contender in their day but at that time the Soundgear line was all the rage and these sort of fell off.

The time span between this bass being released and his death was pretty short. Then they released a "tribute " model.
Paul played so many basses over the years that I don't know how much fans think of this as "his" bass. He wasn't famous enough as a bass player to garner interest beyond their hardcore fans.
I was always interested in finding one, but they are very rare.

How rare are these @socialleper? Do you know how many were produced? Thanks.
Yikes! I have no idea how many of the real sig models were made. Ibanez might be able to tell you. What I can say is that GC and Sam Ash are pretty good about having a sampling of most Ibanez basses, and I'm a pretty consistent window shopper at many of the stores around me, but I've never seen one of these in person.
Poke around on Ebay and Reverb. See if they ever pop up.

I have one of the first ones from 2010... was thinking of selling, but your comment on rarity made me rethink to maybe hold on... might see if I can get a response from ibanez on the numbers produced...

The dichotomy of them is that they are rare, but the demand isn't out of this world either.
As I stated, Paul's death was tragic to Slipknot fans, and a complete non-event to 90% of the world. If you are a fan of the band, I'd say hold on to it for sentimental value. It probably isn't much of an investment piece. Technically a run of the mill German Thumb, which he also played, would be worth more simply because the bass cost more to begin with.
Sad but true.

You make a lot of sense... thank you.
