it depends on what type of sound you were after. The SRF700 is guaranteed to possess a lot more of tonal variation than the SRH500F. But for straight deep, warm and woody tone, I have to admit that the SRH can't be beaten.

Having owned the SRH505 (without the F suffix, hence the fretted one), it makes my SRF705 collect dust and has successfully made me GASsing for the SRH505F.

Loosening the string a bit and cleaning the saddle didn't helped much. Will contact Thomann support tomorrow. Maybe putting a little piece of thin foil or paper inside will help?

Is it going to be your first fretless?

You won't need those lines. Portamentos have already had lines on the side of the neck. Probably if it's going to be your first fretless, you'd still think that you'd need the board fully lined. But most likely when you've owned the Portamento and played it few times, you would know the sidelines were sufficient.

But if you still prefer lined fretless board, why not getting one of Gary Willis signature basses instead? or... have you tried a few cheaper SR fretless models which came with lined board from the factory like the SR37xEF and SR50xF?

So I've been putting off a Portamento for over three years now and since I got my tax refund this week, now I'm really considering a portamento. My local GC has one of the 705 portamentos and have been playing that bass occasionally when I stop by for the past three years (still shocked that it's still there).

I like the way it plays and feels but I don't like the MK1 stock pickups out of the times I've played the portamentos, so I wanted to know if anyone in this club have ever swapped the stock pickups from the portamentos with a different Bartolini pickup or something completely different i.e. Aguilars etc.

You need to dig back through this thread. There have been some swaps. Even one where someone disabled the piezo because they never used it. If my memory serves, most of these posts were over a year ago.

Because of the piezo, some pickup changes can get really tricky.

A quick search found a few posts.

AstralBirth, there has been an SRF-705 hanging on the wall in the Sam Ash, Queens store for about three years too.

I was always tempted to buy it, but never did. Then, when I was seriously thinking of buying a fretless in the fall of 2017, I thought I'd go to the Sam Ash Manhattan store, and see what they had.

Naturally, the turnover in the Manhattan store is much higher than the Queens store. It was then that I first saw the Portamento SF 700, which I eventually bought. I did some thinking, and I thought that every bass does not have to be a five string, and decided that when I bought a fretless, I wanted it to have the same range as an upright bass.

I bought it, January, 2018, and am still on the honeymoon with it.

It is definitely my most versatile-sounding bass.

As of two weeks ago, the SRF-705 which has been in the Queens store for about three years is still there, and now there's a used SRF-705 next to it for $599. I didn't play it, but picked it up and looked at it; it's in pretty good shape. The three year old still has the $949 price tag on it, but I'm sure they'll negotiate.

I say take the plunge. :thumbsup:

Thanks @kirkdickinson I think I'll look into Aguilar pups and pre for the portamento. I will have to admit that the feel of them is super comfortable and fast but the stock electronics don't really wow me other than the piezo.

@Michael Jewels I'm actually thinking about purchasing an SRF700 Fretless Bass, I'm not much of a 5 string player especially on Fretless but SRF705's are very common in GC and Sam Ash compared to an SRF700. Only time I played an SRF700 was when GC had it used but for the price of a used SRF705...

I have an Ibanez srf705 coming in on Tuesday. A new one with the Panga Panga board. I read through the entire thread and haven't seen anyone post about using roundwound strings on it. I would like to use rounds on mine, but wasn't sure if that would be a bad idea with how soft the Panga Panga is supposed to be. I was also thinking of maybe using the GHS Pressurewound strings, but they are so much more expensive. Anyone here have some experience with any of the Panga boards and how they react to different string types?

If you like the sound of rounds use them. If you find them starting to tear up the fretboard, look into having the board coated with Cyanoacrylate.
