Maybe you never asked, or you never posted a pic of your Portamento, or maybe I forgot...
Anyway, welcome on board face_east! Please have #64, we keep waiting for the picture ;-)

A question for the rank and file here: do any of you use any modulation with your Portamento?
I'm just curious.

Thanks,
Mike
I use a Line 6 Helix HX Effects which has just about anything you could want. For fretless effects inspiration I've been listening to lot of Mick Karn and Rob Wasserman's Space Island album lately. Two things I've found that I really love are doubling my signal which gives a slightly chorused Karn-style tone. Great on it's own, plus with two signal paths coming off of it I can go crazy and layer effects onto each path individually if I want. The other thing is a volume swell with a slow watery phaser and a delay set for 350ms. The volume swell cuts off the attack of each note just enough to almost make it sound bowed, especially with just the piezo pickup on. The magnetic pickups emphasize the attack a bit more but it still sounds nice. Great for slow ambient effects, backing chord pads, and general trippy goodness.

Yes, perhaps I should have been clearer, sorry.
By modulation, I meant phasers, flangers, chorus, et cetera.

Mike
I have. Zoom B3 multi efx..... I enjoy using different combinations of chorus,Octaver, and reverb. Using a touch of octave below can be so fat! I remember seeing some concert footage of NIN w/ Pino using it..... I thought, Wow, I've got try some of that!

Don't think I've ever posted a shot of my Portamento. I've been very pleased with her. Love the feel of the neck shape & she can sing when playing over the end of the fingerboard! I've found plenty of interesting tonal options with the pu configuration. I was a bit concerned about switching to round wounds due to the panga panga fingerboard (which Ibanez has substituted for rosewood).
Would you mind adding me to the club?
But, so far so good..... I buffed the board to a higher gloss before restringing & she has held up nicely. I'm always mindful to use the classical vibrato technique instead of side to side string bending.
Would you mind adding me to the club?

does anyone know where you can get 1 of these knobs?

upload_2020-10-8_9-24-47.png

The 1 I got, is missing 1. I also could use a nut. Seems Ibanez' site is not very useful. I found the nut, but it says not available. It's probably for fretted, but, I can grind it down. I can make my own, but, it would be nice to have a factory one.

Maybe I'll end up looking for a black bone & make my own.

But, I can't find those smaller knobs anywhere. I see the cosmo black in the normal (large) ones, but I don't see a supply for any of the smaller ones...

I just picked up one of these, bought used for $650.00 (in excellent condition). It's a lovely bass: I like the look, feel, weight and balance. My very first impression is that I think it will do exactly what I was hoping. My primary basses are an NS Design upright and a Rob Allen fretless. I also have a fretted Ibanez SRH500 (my "poor man's Rob Allen"), which has only a piezo, and an NS Design Radius CR. So I like piezo pickups, especially with tapewounds. My goal with the Portamento was to expand my palette by being able to blend magnetic pickups with the piezo. So far, on the Portamento, I really like the blend of the nasal sound from the bridge pickup, with some thickness from the neck pickup, and depth from the piezo. I have a set of La Bella 750N tapewounds (which is what I use on the Rob and the SRH) on the way and will swap out the flatwounds the Portomento came with. If that ends up sounding too similar to the Rob, then I might go the other direction and slap on a set of GHS Pressurewounds. Electronics work fine and are dead silent. I may eventually replace the pots with better linear taper ones. The E and G strings are a little hotter than the A and D, so I'll monkey around a bit with pickup height and piezo saddle adjustments. The fretboard is interesting... It appears to have some type of coating, but I don't know to what degree it is protective. Does anyone know?

Finally got some La Bella tapewounds on the newly acquired Portamento and, oh my... *That's* the sound I was looking for. Super full and punchy and well-defined, with mwah when needed. I have the neck pickup completely off, the bridge pickup full on, and just a little piezo added for depth. All tone controls dialed completely off. Mids boosted on the amp.
