Ibanez Promethean

Here are a few pics of the Promethean:

That's not the ICE module, looks like a proprietary board. Massive heat sink!

So...pulled the trigger on a Promethean head today. It should be here in about a week or so. It will be driving a GB neoX 212t (4ohm cab). I will A/B it against one side of my Crown CE1000 to determine volume levels and will field test it with my loud classic rock band (vibe control on) and the kinda loud adult contemporary alt/pop/rock (vibe control off?) bands.

I check in after with a report,

No Promethean yet.

Lost by UPS...

I have NEVER had a single successful, trouble-free or BS free shipment with them in my 51 years on this earth - never - not 1. I have had the unpleasant experience of dealing with them dozens of times, unfortunately, and its always lost, late, broken, or, most often, a bunch of BS 'charges' tacked on for no apparent reason that takes MONTHS to fight, and usually comes out in their favour.

I'm currently in that situation right now, fighting for a refund of about $120.00 in duplicate charges on a shipment.

I simply HATE that company.

:mad::rollno::spit::scowl:

There's got to be a decent shipper out there somewhere. Fedex is about 2% better (= still awful).

Cheers,
Cameron

Here's the kicker.

The package was never scanned by UPS. NEVER.

They picked it up, didn't scan it.

It's in their possesion and it's never been scanned...

As long as you have a copy of the waybill, it's proof it was picked up.

As far as the tracking end of things, i just read this last post but as a former tracer for DHL (Yes, I find the packages and figure all this crap out, all courier companies primarily work the same anyway) usually when this happens there is a good change the waybill has fallen off. There tracing department should jump on top of something like this, I know we would have.

Received my Promethean this evening. Initial testing is very promising, it seems to match very well with my Genz neox 212T and my Peavey Millennium 5er. Everything is nice and tight and plenty of low end. Will need a little time to make friends with the gain structure and will report back after gig this weekend. I'm thinking this combination (head, cab, bass) is going to work good for me if the amp can handle real gig volume.

My original one is still missing.

I reordered and my second one is about 100 miles away, which means I should have it tomorrow.

MF has been no help, telling me my only option is wait indefinitely.

It's already been 14 days...

That doesn't seem very fair. So MF is saying, we have your money too bad so sad?
One would think they would file claim with shipper and offer you replacement or refund or discount or something!
Hope it works out quickly for you.

Quick review:

I'm impressed, this amp has character.

It sounds great with everything flat.

It's plenty loud. I ran it hard into a 610 (4 ohms) for about an hour and it sounded huge.

Never rose above room temperature. Quiet fan.

The clip light does come on a little quick on the master side, but it only compresses the signal (no distortion).
Hardly noticeable at volume. To me it's not a headroom issue, I think it's fine.

I can only compare it to the LMII (which I also like) in micro amp arena.

At 6.4 pounds it's the exact same weight as the LMII, but it's bigger. Also it's too thick for one rack space.
It has a gig bag (similar to the LM), but it's not out yet. I'll definitely get the bag when it comes out.

I would call it a toss up tone-wise.
Overall the Ibanez has more features.

I ran the DI into a 1000 watt amp. No problems driving the amp; sounded great.

On early results I would say it's as good as anything in the micro bass amp world.

I have a gig in a big room (about 400 people) in a few of weeks, we'll see how it fairs...

Put the Promethean through the paces Friday night and yesterday. Got lucky Saturday night and was able to A/B it against a GB Shuttle 3.0 and a Mesa Walkabout head (both rated at 300w), cabs used for test were a SWR 410 and my NeoX 212T. Both cabs sounded good but I was really impressed once again with the GB cab. It held its own against two Marshall twins and an aggressive drummer.

It's not as hi-fi as the 3.0 and not as organic as the Mesa but seemed to fit nicely in between the two. Was able to hit gig volume easily and seems to have more headroom than the other two heads. Very user friendly EQ with lots of tonal options and more than enough in the bottom. As I stated in my initial test post; this head sounds really really good with the GB cab, very tight and focused.

The input gain really likes passive basses. Was able to get gain up past 1:00 before input clip light came on with a passive Warwick 5er and a Fender Jazz 4. With my active Mill 5er could only get the gain to about 9:30 and input starts clipping. (the 18 volt pre?).

Power amp clip starts flashing by 12:00 on the master but does not seem to hurt tone. It seems more like very subtle compression.
The taper on the master dials up very quickly so noon on the master is very loud.

Vibe control is subtle but works nicely at gig volume, would have loved the foot switch to be able to punch in and out. Amp stayed cool both nights and fan is very quiet.

CONS:
no active pad
no post eq slave option unless you use balanced out. So can not slave to a power amp and run to front of house at the same time
Foot switch not yet available and will not include graphic EQ on/off, only mute and vibe on/off

Overall: pros outweigh the cons and this amp seems to a great bang for the buck. So far I'd say its a keeper.
