Ibanez SR series recessed output jack

Nice idea, bad implementation. Really hard to get a grip on the plug to pull it out. All my cords are Monster, various plug types, all too short to get a grip. Anybody else have this problem? Solution?

As much as I like Ibanez guitars and basses, their choices for the output jacks and the implementations leave a lot to be desired.

The older barrel jack style isn't much better either.

Definitely the weakest link in otherwise top-notch instruments IMO.

The problem is that the plugs' gripping area (barrel?) is too short, the recess too deep. Unlike my strat where the output jack is not actually recessed, just angled.

What about permanently keeping (soldering?) a 1/4" female-to-male adapter in the jack?

Just brainstorming. No idea if it would work.

I actually had problems with the over sized, bigger diameter . After a while the jacks were intermittent. Changes barrel jacks out got, rid of monster bass cables. Went to neutrik and mogami fine since.

Decide if you like the bass or the Monster cables better? If you like the bass, maybe a different kind of cable might be easier to get ahold of? I think Neutrik ends are a bit longer and might be better suited to your needs.

Giorob - no such thing, at least that I've ever seen. At this point the only solution I can see is to pull out the jack and add some spacers of some sort at the external end. Even if I could find the perfect size spacers (internal/external diameter), It's a rather inelegant solution, and a pain in the butt to implement.

I suppose I could try a 1/4 male to 1/4 male followed by a 1/4 female to 1/4 female, but that sounds more like a low budget porn movie plot than a viable solution!

They definitely exsist, but all of these are 'terrible' ideas- those adapters will be ready and waiting to either fail on a gig, let your cable fall out, or the adapter will catch or bump something and bend the adapter or your bass jack or worse.

Do the reasonable thing and get another cable- not to open a can of worms, but there are many better-or equal cables that are cheaper and less bulky.. plus, youd spend 20$ or more on a quality adapter, or worse youd get a cheap one that WILL fail and erase the quality of the monster anyway

wvbass - Obviously, I'm not going to sell an excellent bass over a small problem like this. Appreciate the tip on Neutrik cables, someone else suggested Mogami, I'll have a look next time I'm at GC. From the online pictures they look about the same, though Planet Waves looks like a possibility. This just seems so silly, I've got 5 different brands/models of cables that all have the same problem on this bass. You'd think that someone in the Ibanez design group would have noticed. Maybe I should contact them to see what kind of cables THEY use?

Never had a problem with unplugging my monster cables from my sr756.

Hmm, ill holler at my buddy with the dugout sr jacks and ill check my cables in it!

I have some fender c.s. cables that are really pretty slim, and mogami's seem pretty good for ya too.. maybe a right angle jack.would work pretty well too

I had an SR700 and never had any problem with the output jack design. I actually liked it better then the regular "fender" style.

No problems with Planet Waves, Lava Cable, Fender, Hosa, Live Wire, ProCo or any other cable I've used over the years with my SR605 and SR505. I have not used Monster, however.

I've always liked the Ibanez angled output jack.

I have never had problems using Planet Waves cables with Ibanez basses. Monster cables were hit and miss mainly because of the extra wide barrels.

I just found a monster cable that I thought I'd lost, one of the cheaper grey/black molded numbers (performer 500). Although the barrel is even thicker than the monster bass cables, it's LONGER, which allows to get a grip on it. Damned if I can tell a difference in the sound. Also, I think that there may be a difference in the thickness of the plug itself, as the 500 is easier to plug/unplug.

Never had that problem; currently using VOX bass cables (prior to that: Planet Waves). But if the cable you're using doesn't fit...get another one that does - simple Some ppl pay too much for fancy cables anyway
