Ibanez SR505...or SR in General

I've never played anything in that price range that can compete with my SR500. When it was my main bass, I used it for prog rock, covers, and jazz, and everyone I played with loved the sound, plus it still has what I think is perhaps the most perfect neck I've ever played on.

I would, however, invest in a better amp. If your drummer really is hearing something and isn't just a gear snob (which I think is most of the problem), that will clear it up, because I really doubt the problem is with your bass.

Ibanez + Crate? Oh, God. You must sound like poop.

Just kidding; agree with most here.

I have seen major touring bands playing arenas and festivals around the world where the bass player is using a '70s Fender Mustang, which most should agree is not the best sounding bass, even for its type of sound.

I always laugh when I see bands playing the cheapest gear possible, yet they absolute kill. Ever seen Femi Kuti live? The main bass player plays some sort of $200 Cort, yet the guy sounds like his playing a $7000 Fodera.

But I also agree that your amp is a bit marginal for gigging.

I had an SR500, and it was a very nice bass (especially for the money) - good tone and very comfortable / playable. I used it live a lot, and I used it on a few recordings where I liked the tone better (for the song) than my Musicman Stingray, my Zon Sonus and my Fender Precision.

You can feel free to kick him in the cronk if he brings it up again. :D

I was willing to spend a couple hundred more then I did on my SR500 but that neck just felt so good to me that I didnt feel the need. Im not going to apologize for liking an inexpensive bass more then a Warwick.

I had an SR years ago, but really love the ATK700 (blonde, of course); I had to get over my Fender bias (I'm old), but this is my main bass--along with my newer Jag--and it just kills everything I've played, which is a bit of stuff now at 56. I remember when Ibanez first started out with their SR line in the eighties, and it was fashionable to put it down. I used one on an impromtu gig in '88 and have secretly loved them ever since.

I have a BTB I love the bass and the sound, Ibanez makes very good basses, they don't cheapen they're product for the price (even though they easily could). Drummer is a gear snob. Ibanez isn't only for nu-metal (blegh).

I used an SR855 in a country band for about 8 years. This was back when they had the two jazz pickups in them. My band opened up for Trisha Yearwood and her bass player had the same bass. Same color too. He had upgraded the pickups on his to active EMGs and it sounded great, I ended up doing the same to mine. wish I still had that bass. So yeah, a Soundgear in a country band has been done several times.

All good comments here. I'll take a slightly different direction. Everyone has their preferences. Everyone has their own 'crap' list. On this board you will have people that love fender or hate em, love spector or hate em. the little drummer boy obviously has his preferences. if he can't get over them, time for one of you to move on. if he gets past it and you guys can jam....well you'll laugh about it in a few years. if it's his personality....well.....smack him with a zidian

I just picked up a SR500 and wasn't even looking for one. Great bass and one one of the better ones in the price range. Once you plug that into a nice rig, he should shut up.

The bass is no problem, but that crate bx-100. Not only does the tone suck, but ive had more of those things crap out on me than any amp ever. Ive literally had 4 between me and friends go bad randomly. The last one was literally blowing fuses up. I can understand a band member who is worried about gear crapping out but your bass is fine.
