ibanez sr506 club

I've bought and returned two SR506's this year for the identical problem. It really sucks because I love the feel of the neck. In both cases, the preamp started to crap out about one month after owning them. I'd get all kinds of hisses, pops, crackles & intermittent loss of signal. And yes, I did change the battery. ;)

Ever since, I've been a bit leary of basses with Bartonlini preamps. I was asked by the salesman if I wanted to send the basses in to have them fix. I said no. I guess it's just a principle I have. If you buy a NEW bass, it shoudn't be giving you this much trouble already. IN addition, it really makes me wonder about Ibanez's QA these days. The newer stuff seems to have a lot of QA issues, yet my 1990 Ibanez Universe 7-string is still running tip-top. No problems whatsoever.

I really hope Ibanez will get there act together again because they are incredible players....when everything works properly. :(

The preamp is the MK-1 Bartolini, which is a mass-manufactured preamp used in Corts, Ibanez, and Conklin basses manufactured in Korea. I don't much care for it myself, but I've never had issues with it. If I was going to replace anything on the bass it would be the preamp. A nice three-band Audere would go nicely I think.

Good to know. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm still on the 6-string search. If I can't find anything else I'm happy with, I may just pick up a used SR506 and replace the preamp.

I finally got some pictures of mine.

I really love the colour of the neck on mine. Beautiful!

hello folks. just one question. will the bass warp inside a hardcase in the aircraft hold? coz it gets pretty cold there. i'm buying a 506 in a few weeks time and am having it transported to india from the us. it'll have to come in as perfect a condition as possible coz i cant have it setup or repaired here.

Hey just got one and its pretty nice i have to say(especially for $300)

I have one of the older ones(pre bartolini pups & pre. Side input jack instead of front, maple neck and body) I was wondering if someone could give me any info on what the actual specs are on it. Especially the preamp and the pups. The pups say AEX8 or something similar on it.

Im at work at the mo but will post picks as soon as i get home

I really like my 506. Great tone and it is very easy to play. My G string is just as loud/present as the rest. Very even across this bass. I like the Barts and the preamp. I like the clear, commercial sound I get out of it, lots of bottom, plus I like the ability to ramp up the mids and have a J-Bass type of sound. She's a keeper.
