Ibanez Tuning Peg Problem - Common?

Howdy, all

I was at rehearsal last night when I noticed that my D string was flat. This is super unusual, as my bass (04 SR-505 w/ EB slinky 5s) is typically rock-solid unless someone bumps into the keys.

I turn the key - nothing. Keep turning - nothing. Think the string must be unwinding (it's happened before!) but nothing. Double check that I'm actually turning the D-key - nothing.

All of a sudden the tuning peg goes "POW!" And sheers itself off from the rest of the machine.

Has anyone else had this problem? Will modern replacement Ibanez keys work for an 04 model?

I've had that happen with several Gotoh mini tuners. Your description of the "POW!" sound is spot on. I switched to Hipshot after a few years of that happening. The Gotoh tuners aren't bad, but some just aren't made well I guess.

Yup happened on my Ergodyne right before a show once... Was fun that night, made me really think while playing for once

current Ibanez Gotoh GB7 or GB707 tuners will work just fine. I've had my 2001's tuners replaced with 2015 purchase.

I've been playing Ibanez basses since the mid 80s, and never had a problem with tuners, however many people (including me) had to get their bridges replaced on 2012 SR5 bridges due to cheap metal that was bending. Ibanez sent me a replacement bridge even though I was way past the warranty period for that particular problem.

I own several Ibanezes with the original machines (Gotoh knockoffs) and have never had that problem. I've also installed GB7 machines on a few other Ibbys, and as another poster said, they work fine.

WoW.....I really thought I was going to be a one off Exactly the same experience (and on D) ending in "POW!"
Dismantled the peg so I could see where the issue lay....all down to a little snapped bolt Ah, that moment when you finish working in the trades and say "Pfft....I'll never need a tin of threaded bolts of every conceivable length and thread size" DOH!
