Ibanez Upright Bass

I've already put an order in for one of these, they are saying March delivery at my local dealer.
The fact you can play it arco is great and you can use standard bass strings on it.
It will come with D'adarrios and I'll put labella or thomastiks on it.
I havent heard if there will be a 5 string version.

If by standard strings you mean electric bass strings, Arco is going to be tough and not sound very good. Even flatwounds. See below though for the rest of my response.

Does anyone know what kind of strings are on this? Are there traditional type strings for a 34" EUB?

Not really, but I have a 34" scale EUB that Kevin from krappyguitars.com built for me and I used the d'addario ns bass traditional strings. When I originally got it I had asked him to put ghs flats on it but they did not feel at all like an upright and sounded even less so. I had to cut the daddarios strings shorter- you need to secure the wraps below where youre going to cut. I tried solder but it didn't work well- crushing them down in a vise did. Then you have to unwrap some of the top layer. It can be done though, mine work really well.

I have no association with krappy other than that Kevin and I grew up in the same town (he's 10 years older than me though so we didn't know each other well) and he taught my brother bass lessons a while ago. But he lives far away now. However, he built me a really cool instrument that can be bowed, and it was significantly less than the ibanez. I altered the pickup after I got it, installing a pickup from jjb electronics under the bridge feet. I specified 34" scale but he can make anything. Don't let the silliness of his website scare you - he knows what he's doing but has a very wonderfully bizarre sense of humor.

With that being said, the ibanez does look interesting.

I really love the idea, and I've wanted some sort of bull fiddle or EUB forever. However, the sound of the UB804
is a little too "mwah" for me. More like a fretless bass with rounds. I don't think it sounds very much like an upright.
Don't get me wrong, I love fretless bass. Fretless basses sound like fretless basses. Uprights should sound like uprights (or as close as possible).
For me an upright needs that thump and growl thing. Does that make sense?

If you use synthetic gut strings like Innovation, you'll get all of the thump and growl you want. Since this bass is piezo, you can use anything you want. Tapewound would be a good match too.

A bunch of Ibanez models that were out of stock at Sweetwater are now available. I don’t think they got a lot of the UBs, as it’s still listed as “more on the way.”

I’m intrigued, but the vids do make it seem like it sounds more like a fretless than upright. The Aerium sounds more upright than the UB to me. ;)

Very curious myself. I only play electric bass guitar, so I would probably play the UB804 with extended fingerings and never bow. Obviously I would want as much of a UB sound as possible, but I also see value in this instrument in a restaurant/cabaret setting where the management wants the “look” of traditional jazz and a headstock on a tight stage could potentially topple a waiter or a tray of drinks. I saw a guy recently playing a zeta eub in just such a setting.
