Ibanez Upright Bass

It's common knowledge not to leave any active bass plugged in all of the time. If you're on a gig, yeah, it's going to be plugged in for a few hours. That shouldn't harm it.
Why would YOU re-solder a new bass? Won't that void your warranty? :cautious:
It's a warranty repair. They should do it or pay to have a qualified tech do it. :)
My LMS is now closed for the duration. I'm think I'm gonna have to contact Ibanez.
Just following up...
I've gotten nowhere with my UB804. It's worse now. Won't even play for two minutes without crapping out. I've put it away. I live on Maui, so the local tech guy is pretty much hunkering down and hard to get ahold of. But I did get ahold of Ibanez and they've been pretty cool. They ok'ed the local tech to check it out and they would reimburse me. Unfortunately haven't been able to get the guy.
Just wondering if you heard anything with your bass because it sounds like it's the same problem.

I emailed Ibanez and didn't get a reply. It's been a month. Probably shut down.

H'm... Some discussion, no consensus :D I may try the NS strings.

How about preamps / amp sims / cab sims for recording? I'm not thrilled with the sound using my current preamp (TC SpectraDrive).

Hey Clusterflux, (nice name) I bought and am using the NS strings. They are very nice. Just getting use to them. Sometimes this bass has a little too much mwah I think. Lighter touch on the strings of course helps a bunch. I also made a string dampener out of foam to put down by the bridge. These strings to bow nicely too even though not at a point to do it in public. Practice practice right!

I tried some TI Jazz flats while I was waiting on the NS strings. They were good too but didn't bow as well. Threw on a set of black tape wounds. Sounded nice but absolutely no Arco.

My LMS is open again. They said Ibanez was going to replace the bass, which is very cool.
However, they also said they'd just got another in if I was interested in checking it out. Which I was. :cautious:
So… they replaced it! Very cool of Jason at N'Stuff Music! :woot:
They're my favorite store for a lot of reasons!!! :D
This bass doesn't have the issue so far. :cautious:
I'm in love again! Can't stop playing it!!! :hyper:

Ibanez has sent me the 'guts' of the pickup and my local guy at Bounty Music is putting it in the bass, and Ibanez has said that they would reimburse me for the costs. Over three months since I bought the thing. Bad timing with the virus and Ibanez being closed, and all. Hopefully, I will get it this week and all will be good.

Hi, A bit of side work left some cash burning in my pocket and resulted in the purchase of a UB804. I've never played a fretless anything so I've got a ton of questions...

First one is:
Should the notes buzz when notes are allowed to sustain? If it were a fretted bass I'd call the sound fret buzz. I tried adjusting height of the strings from the saddles and I feel as though I get less with higher strings, but I cannot remove it. I don't hear it when the strings are plucked while open. Certainly lack of technique could be culprit. (A friends nephew is at a fancy music college as a jazz bass student and we have a zoom call scheduled.)

Second (and really just curious as this isn't a problem):
I hear what I think is a sympathetic vibration from the stand. Its most prominent when I pluck the open G while not holding the base. It is surprisingly loud. You don't hear it through the amp so its not a big deal.

Thanks!

The sound you are hearding is not a buzz it is what is known as "mwah" and it is desirable sustain sound for a lot of players, my 804 does it and I like it. If it bothers you, try loosening the truss rod and put a little bit of bow in the neck, that will eliminate it.

Just check and make sure the bass is properly mounted to the stand and tighten the mounting screws firmly but don't over tighten them, that should get rid of the vibration. Enjoy your new bass!

Hi Tveg. Mine has this too. Mine seems to be coming from the stand when playing G on the A string. It's intermittent and doesn't appear to come thru the amp. Please let us know if you find anything.

I re-set the main post, hopefully didn’t over tighten, and put it on a carpet. I haven’t noticed it since then. I’ll try it off the carpet and see if that’s helping.

Hi, @Phyzzbin,

Tried in a couple of locations and I don’t hear it any more. I would note that I had a zoom lesson and the teacher had me adjust the height and angle of the bass, so that may have been a factor. I raised it up and made it more upright.

I’m curios if repositioning would impact what you are hearing.

Also, I’m curios if you get any fingerboard buzz on the lowest F of the E string.

Gave it a go just now and no rattling. Same as yesterday.

Re: extra fingerboard buzz. I've played 4 or 5 uprights as they've come thru my LMS. All of the setups were different from the factory. The one I own had the G string pretty low and C was buzzing more than expected. Raised it up a bit and all is well. Saying that, I don't remember seeing and actual setup guide from Ibanez.
I'm hardly an expert. Did I miss something? Anyone have the measurements for setup?

Heya, has anyone worked out a great way to measure the mounting angle on the stand? I end up adjusting mine a bunch because I’m a new player and haven’t found the best position yet, but also my teacher has one so I need to reset hers to my position every lesson and it’s time-consuming to find the right angle. I’m considering tape and marker on the stand head, but I’m hoping someone’s come up with a simpler method that’s less likely to peel off in transit (or even better, can be easily applied to someone else’s instrument without marking it) :)

I looked at this Ibanez UB805 5 string Electric Upright Bass & the 34 inch scale makes it fall in between a 1/4 Size Double Bass & a 1/8 Size Double Bass so it's an interesting middle ground.
