I'd like some input from Mesa 400+ users...

Where do you guys generally set your Master volume and Input volume?
I seem to "tinker" with both volume settings all the time, but just can't find the "sweet spot" on the input volume.
I use input 2. It seems that at high volumes I get lots of distortion, which is ok for some things. How high can you go on the master without it distorting?
Also, I know it's been done a few times before, but it's been a while If you feel like it, post your settings and what input/inputs do you use?

graphic EQ on, with just a slight bump up in the 2 lowest sliders
bass knob at 5.5
mids and highs at 5
master at about 6
channel at about 3.5 or 4

using my sterling, it gets wooly and gritty sounding, using my passive custom, not so much...

It's been awhile, here's my best recollection of what I used.

Input 1:6
Input 2:3
Master:3-4
Treble:7
Mid:10
Bass:5
Bright switch on
Graphic off

This was with a DBX compressor in front of it, it bumped up the input quite a bit. I bought the rig together, and never realized how much the DBX added until I tried removing it and suddenly the amp seemed far too quiet.

master-2-7
(my 400+ has a half power mod allowing me to run much higher master knob settings.)

If ya want to try something different sometime:
Engage the graphic EQ with all sliders in the full down position.
This acts as a multi-band attenuator between the pre and power section, allowing you to
run much higher master knob levels,(5-7) with any pre-amp settings you like.

Master volume run 6-8
Pre's running at 2 and 4 or so...so they're balanced.

I want more from my power tubes and less from my pre-amp as I'm looking to keep the amp as clean as possible on the lows.

My EQ settings are quite unnatural and exaggerated, so they won't really help you out. But...

Bass pulled, @ 6-7
Mid @ 1-2
Treble pulled @ 1

Graphic:
2 far left bands 85% up
next left band: shelved at about 75% up
All other bands @ 0%

Vol 1 @ 6, Vol 2 @ 5 and pulled, mids 100%, bass at 4 and pulled, treble at 5, master at whatever makes the ears bleed
