ID this Bass... please!!

Hi everybody...

An old girlfriend had this bass and, wouldn't you know it, I miss the bass more than I miss her.

The only thing is: I can't remember the make of the bass.

It's a longhorn of the Danelectro style (actual picture is actual bass), and I *think* it might be a Neptune or Jerry Jones Longhorn, but can't be sure.

Can anyone ID it? The name/logo on the head should be a dead giveaway for someone more familiar with what's out there. I just can't be sure.

The shape says Danelectro Longhorn, but there have been a number of decent copies over the years. Entwistle allegedly used one(Dan-O, not a copy)on the infamous string-breaking 'My generation' sessions.

I think the knob placement is a bit different(OP vs JJ ad), which admittedly doesn't prove anything.

Yup, that logo is Jerry Jones. Never liked the look of the longhorns, but love my single cutaway!

I'm practically convinced it's the Jerry Jones, too -- the only thing is, I remember a friend seeing it hanging on my wall and asking if that was my "______."

I can't remember what he called it (and no, dear readers, it wasn't "bass") but it definitely wasn't "Jerry Jones" -- but it may have been "neptune."

Is there any chance the head says "neptune" under the Jerry Jones logo? I remember seeing whatever he called it on the head...

You may be nuts, sir, but not in this case, I think. The Jerry Jones is made by Neptune (as far as I know, anyway), so I'm trying to figure out if the head could have said "Neptune" on it... maybe going down, vertically, like on the Danoelectric.

Anyone? I'm scouring google/google images for pictures...

"Neptune" was a model name for the Jerry Jones longhorn line. The name comes from where the original Danelectro basses were made - Neptune, NJ.

The bass in the original photo is a Jerry Jones for sure.

Buskman is 100% correct.
In this old family photo you can see two Jerry Jones basses, one has the JJ logo, the other has the JJ Neptune logo.

If I remember correctly, neptune referred to the upgraded bridge on the JJ instruments. Some JJ's had the "authentic" rosewood, non-adjustable, bridges, while the "Neptune" instruments had the fancy, individual string adjustable, bridges. There was a slick li'l silver adhesive just past the nut to advertise.

These Neptune instruments had different bridges than the fancier ones you find on the current instruments.

Both my single cutaway instruments, guitar and bass, were Neptunes!
