Appears as though the pickup has been swapped for a Dimarzio Model One or lookalike.
It's much smaller than a model one, likely guitar humbucker sized considering the bass is 24" scale.
Thanks, all. For $50 should I pull the trigger and make it a project bass? I like the body style and have been itching to do a build.
Do it. The pickup alone is probably worth that.
Yeah, if I had an extra $50 burning a hole, I'd probably go see it. Might even offer him less ($30?) and see where you end up.

That bass would be cool for Royal Blood type effects
It looks like my short scale Gem. The pickup sounds sort of like a humbucker, the neck is fair, the tuners crap. What do you expect you're going to get from a no name bass? If you want a body and neck for a project go check it out, but I would make no assumptions of good quality about any of the hardware on it.
Reminds me of Japanese basses from the 60's like Tokai. Real lo-fi garage vibe, and some pros are now playing the crap stuff from years ago, switching out the electronics and having a luthier set them up as best as they can be.
