at least you have that opportunity with fenders. with sx's the best you can do is send them back at your expense and get another one.

What was crappy about the Fenders? Let me guess... The setup was bad!
If I thought some of those basses merely suffered from a bad setup, I would have settled on a purchase long before I determined that there were a few crappy Fenders for sale.
And your SX basses were all perfect, right out of the box, right? Whatever, man. Play what you want. I'm playing Fender and MusicMan.

They were pretty darn good out of the box, but bought with an eye on upgrading them. Still, they're both great playing basses and were so when I took them out of the box.
I think it's great that you think it's something to tell me you play a Fender and MusicMan...more power to you...I have a Fender P-Bass that I love to play, too.
oh, i think the necks will last for a good long time if you take care of them. i will probably string my sx's with flats and use them for when i need a thud bass. or maybe i'll give one to my grandson when he's older. but yeah, for the most part i'm done with them.
The point was not to brag. I'm not playing Sadowsky and Alembic. The point is: Play what you want. I'm playing Fender and Musicman.
I'm just trying to put together how a mass production bass, with a very low price, could be made with properly seasoned wood. That's all. Maybe they'll last forever. Who cares for $100.00, right? It's just a curiosity thing.

Not so. Just saying it's a crap shoot when buying any kind of bass.
not really... if you go out and buy something that is renowned for being well made/sounding/good/a quality instrument all around... it's not really a crap shoot..
i don't know how seasoned the wood is. it appears to have been dipped in polyurethane like a candy apple
maybe that's what's cutting down on harmonic content. anyway, for $100 you'll do a lot better with an sx than the $100 basses in my day, that's for sure. and it will record very well and stay in tune. not the most comfortable bass ever and the frets needed work, but definitely worth $100.
I buy a MIA P bass used for 600$ , 5 years from now I have kept care of it and i had a nice bass 5 years and I still can get 600$ for it, So i woul rather buy the used fender , treat it well , have a nice bass and sell it later.Its like you borrowed a sweet bass.

You definitely can't do better for $100.00. We're from the same day (or close), Jimmy. I remember buying a used Hondo II for $100.00. There wasn't anything around that price, new, unless you were buying it from a department store. The department store stuff was complete garbage.
There's plenty of ridiculous in this thread to go around.

Is playability not part of performance? It is for me. Is recording the only facet of performing that would determine that one bass does as well as another? Of course not.

I didn't assume you knew anything about it, quite the opposite. I was pretty sure you didn't and you've confirmed that. Why is it any less to state that the performance is equal?

Still, the fact remains that a $200 SX was demonstrated to perform as well as a Pre-CBS Fender.
