I've never met a Fender that didn't require nut work or fret end dressing to suit my requirements.

EBMMs are usually pretty good straight out of the box on the fret ends but the nut slots still need adjusting for me.

I purchased a AVS '62 J RI about a month before my SXs and the Fender neck has since warped beyond the adjustment range of the trussrod and has developed numerous dead spots. The SXs are fine.

Am I the only one who has tried to guess which is which in the last 6 or 7 pages? Take a stab at it. If it isn't scientific, at least it will be fun. People take this stuff way too seriously. This is a fun thread about tone. If you just leave it at that, you might enjoy yourself for a moment.

I think most necks, even on some of the cheapest basses out there will last if you take care of them. Case in point, the Yamaha RBX170 that my brother gave me. The things older than dirt now and other than normal wear and tear type issues the neck and body are still in good shape because on the whole, the bass was taken care of.

I'd venture a guess that the vast majority of TB'ers play in some sort of band, be it a garage band, sit in at open mic's, cover bands, church ensambles, pickup bands with friends, blues bands, make some noise for fun bands etc. etc.

Doesn't have to be at a pro level to constitute playing in a band IMO.

There are even some with record deals , and touring bands, session guys , people with nice endorsment deals etc. etc. here as well, but I'm sure the VAST majority of TB'ers don't stay locked in thier bedrooms just practicing alone.

That's as far as I got before I stopped caring. I like the gist of this thread more than most because you can actually try and listen to the music and make a guess rather than opining from a digital soapbox. Rock on, it looks like your band is doing well!

My guess would be that the Mark Lind & Unloved 1st track is an SX and the DEATH & TAXES 1st track is the P bass. Also a heads up...in one of those links you have a picture of you playing the P bass... not sure if it's a distractor, hey it could be, but I stand by my choices. :)

Of course I don't think you are a hack, Savit....my problem was with Mongo basically saying I am a poor crasftsman, which is an insult and, according to everyone I have EVER worked with, very untrue!

Your playing is very good. No doubt there. I admit, I am not much into rock or punk anymore (though we did open for Ron Emory from TSOL very recently, and basically all of southern Californnia's old school punk "royalty" was in attendance. Even top surf people like Jeff Ho were there)..and very soon we will be opening for Dave Alvin (in a few months).

For rock and punk, maybe the SX/Fender comparisons do not matter so much, but I am telling you, with the non-rock music I do, clarity and hi-fidelity is vitally important.

Could be a distractor... but if you go into the pictures section, there are pictures of me playing both basses, as well as the 08 American Standard. :)

I'm serious that I've got FAR more luck than tallent! Not joking. I"ve been lucky.

Speaking of TSOL... Two buddies of mine are alumi of Joe Wood's solo bands.

Steve O'Sulllivan still drums for him, and Jay Crowley played guitar in Joe's band for a while. :) Both have chops that extend far beyond punk . :)

Love Dave Alvins stuff as well. D&T has been know to do a Dave Alvin cover here and there when the spirit moves us.

They say roots and Rockabilly music are the "Punk Rock Retirement" program..and I believe it, 'cause so many of these old school punkers are involved in it in some way, shape or form. There is a lot of good stuff out there. After sharing a bill this weekend with some excellent surf bands (slacktone, Eliminators, etc) I have rediscovered my love for that style as well. Lot's of old punkers involved in that genre as well, it seems.

Very true.

If you like the "Instrumental/surf-ish" type music, check out D&T guitarists old band... The Cadillac Hitmen. Fun stuff he was doing between The Bruisers and D&T. I believe the term they used was "Desert Surf". :)
