Identify the SX vs. Fender in the mix thread

I think the reason this type of thread exists is that often we SXers have threads that celerate how much we enjoy modding our cheapies and making them comparable to many $500-1000 basses, only to have a boutique-y troll to come bashing. I see that more frequently than an SXer trolling in the Ritter threads about how their SX with Lollars trumps their bass.

Of course this is IMHO and please note I have some very solid production basses in my basement, too.

have to admit i don't get the whole sx modding thing. i guess i don't have to as long as you're happy but i've seen some folks mod then with expensive pickups and pres and tuners, and by the time they got done, they'd spend that much money on an american fender. doesn't really compute in my brain, but again, what matters is the happiness of the person playing it, so i guess i should just shut up.

Even with new pickups, bridge and tuners, an SX is probably still cheaper than an MIA Fender.

And if you have to play a nasty dive bar in a crappy area of town, might be good to have a cheapo bass that somewhat sounds like one's nicer bass.

Orange Line - Fender.
Whole Damn Thing - SX
Sad Songs - SX
I'll be there - SX
Cold Hearted - Fender
No one to cry to - Fender
Coke and jack - Fender

No one to cry to and Orange Line were the best tones IMO.

Good question. It is not my confidence in my bass or it's ability, the fact I play it reflects that. I've got 30yrs experience & the prosperity of my band at stake - I wouldn't waste my time on a bass I wasn't absolutely confident in.

How good do I think it is? I've lost count how many times I've stated exactly that.

Truth be told, when I log off TB after a rather "spirited" discussion about SX basses I chuckle sometimes at how many people try to prove to me that I can't gig with my bass or lay it down & sound just as good or better as if I had done it on my MIA Fender. All I can say is they are dead wrong. Whether they choose to believe me or not is their hang-up, not mine. No one's talking boutique hand-made basses, but a simple CNC'd bass is not exactly rocket science to replicate, yet I am amazed at the sheer volume of people who cannot believe that. Maybe that's a pill too bitter for them to take. Again, someone else's hang-up not mine. So as I said, I'm not out to prove anything, but I love to dispel BS every chance I get.

Ya, actually CNC technology IS a result of rocket science. There are thousands of great minds that indirectly contributed to a CNC'd bass.

I think the only way to settle this is to do the same test but in a metal mix!

I like #2 tone better whichever it is, kinda reminds me of quarter pounders, im guess thats the SX with the pickups I never heard of before.

I did. It was buried in a short scale thread but I had a SX SS Jazz with Nordies vs a Lakland DJ4. People can't tell.

The reason for this thread? That's very funny. Same reason there are wishbass and Bongo threads, I guess.



Yeah, I am a "boutique-y troll".


'96 MIA P-bass. Used. $500

Japan sting P-bass, used. $300

MIM Fender jazz bass with Fralin PUPs---about $450

Carvin LB6, used, $500

Czech upright bass, new, $1800 (for uprights, that's low end)


So, my reputation as a "boutique-Y troll" is intact! Good!

I have learned something really good from this thread, though. I have learned that pre-CBS Fenders are a waste of time. So are American Fenders. So are boutique Fender copies (lakland, Celinder, Sadowski). I have learned that all the pro musicians out there who use quality gear are wrong. I have learned that GAS as we know it, is a trivial waste of time. I have learned that all the classic recordings made with Fender basses over the years (especially early motown and other styles that used pre-CBS basses) could have been recorded with an SX and sound just as good. And I have also learned that despite my 30+ years of experience as a bassplayer, I have been wrong all the time. I should have just gotten an SX. But most of all, what I have learned is that talkbass, like most internet forums, is a clique, filled with members who rush to defend one of their leaders, right or wrong. I have learned that talkbass is filled with people who don't care if you are a good bass player or not. It's your reputation on THIS forum that trumps all.

That's ok. Stick with your SX basses. It does not hurt me one bit, because one day I will get an excellent deal on that Sadowsky that you sold (because your SX is sooooo much better)

Yes, that's the same Mark Lind. Somewhere on the internet or youtube there's a few vids of me actually playing bass with The Ducky Boys, doing a "guest spot".

Nope, there's definitly some SX in there.

Why? Because I like the way that bass sounds and plays, and the 64 P always goes to the studio with me too. So why not?

Sometimes my friend, it is more a matter of being able to say, "I did that." than anything else....
