I respect Jauqo from other posts I have read, but I wonder what new name or qualification is to be given to any modded bass. Lollar ex-SX P bass clone? It certainly isn't a Lollar P bass. I understand how my modded basses are no longer pure Electra or pure Epiphone. But what are they now too? Delano P bass? Lollar flying thunder V bass? When are they no longer what they were? Just after modding stock pickups, or any other parts?

So, if you change the sx bridge to a badass, change the pickups to Lollars, it becomes a badass Lollar bass? :P

No, seriously, I don't understand Jauqo's point, especially concerning this dicussion. Sounds a bit stubborn, but he must have a reasoning behind it. I mean no offense, I just want to understand why is it even important if it's pure sx or not.

All I was saying was how is the SX a SX in a blindfold test with a Lollar pickup in it.


Would the true comparison between a Vintage Fender P bass and a un modded SX be the real blind fold test?

Ok, I think I got your point of view. Since the Lollar is supposed to be a vintage pickup, then it should not come as a surprise how similar they can sound on this test.

It's also proof, however, of how good the SX can be made to sound, and that it might have good sounding wood. I wish I could buy one SX, just to try out the stock pickups, but I have limited space at the moment (expensive they are not, but I don't have the biggest room in all nyc, the amp and two basses taking enough space as it is.)

That's not what this one was supposed to be about. :D

EDIT TO ADD: There have been numerous other threads with modded SX's vs. other brands. Wondering why the mods in this particular thread have been such a sticking point. ?? I don't recall the fact that the SX had aftermarket pickups in those threads creating any issues or problems for anyone ??

I received the Mark Lind "Homeward Bound CD a few days ago & transferred the entire CD to my iPod. The last couple of gigs were fairly long drives (45min & 1:10min one-way respectively) and I thought hey, what better time than now to give it a complete listen. It was cool knowing (after being disclosed in this thread) that a few of my favorite tracks off that recording just happened to turn out to be the SX/Lollar bass. However, I could not recall every track/bass combination from memory, which then got me thinking about this thread - which in turn only managed to distracted me momentarily from the cool tunes. :rolleyes: My next thought was stop overthinking things because it's only distracting you from what's really important - just enjoy the ride while it lasts & the great music. :) ;)

For the record I have no issues with SX brand basses. I am not a gear snob.

Exactly.
I have all 3 CD's, and I knew "the truth can be brutal" and "death & taxes" were all Fender and the "homeward bound" CD had at least 1 track with the SX. But even having it narrowed down that much and having the actual CD (no compression from the internet, better speakers) I wouldn't have bet anyone one which is the SX/Lollar. Yes, I hear different tones, but that doesn't have to mean it's a different bass. The D&T CD has a different tone than "the truth...", and I don't just mean the type of songs. So with HB, I was definately curious which songs featured the SX/Lollar, but I can't tell using my ears, and at the end of the day, I just really like the music...so it doesn't really matter.
The one person who I hope benefits from this thread besides Savit getting some well-deserved exposure for his music, is Jason Lollar. IMO, he should always be considered if someone is shopping for an excellant vintage p pickup. This thread can be turned the otherway, instead of Sx holding it's ground against Fender...maybe it should be "Lollar holds it's ground against a vintage Fender, even when installed in an SX."

Exactly what I was getting at - all this microanalysis stuff regarding pickup replacement, whether we didn't get to play the instrument for ourselves :rolleyes:, etc., does it really matter? It's interesting, perhaps even fun for a while, but ultimately resembles something closer to a desperate denial or at least a calibrate distraction. The fact that these 2 instruments sounded remotely close at all in the first place would have been quite an accomplishment, the fact they sound as close as they do is amazing given the task at hand (sounding like a vintage '64 P-bass). The micro-dissection of parameters only serves to detract from the larger picture. You can miss a whole forest if you're only focused on one tree.
