Identify this Gretsch Electromatic

This shortscale popped up for sale, and I was wondering if anyone can tell me anything useful from the poor pictures. It's supposedly a few years old, doesn't say Junior Jet II on the headstock, but I couldn't find any info about older models online. IIRC, Gretsch used to have three price points a few years back - US, Japan and Korea. This one is priced above the current JJII, but the owner can't find any markings or serial on it that would shed light on its provenance.

Some further googling finally led me to some pictures of the G2022 Junior Jet, the single pickup one. Looks like that's the one. Unless this turns out to be a Japanese or US model, the asking price of close to $500 seems pretty ridiculous to me.

No, G2022. The G2202 is the infamous Junior Jet II with two single coils. This is (probably) a G2022 with one TV Jones designed humbucker.

No, I'm tellin' ya. The one with two un-buckers is the G2220. G2022 is an occasional typo.

What was the model number on the earlier single pickup version? If memory serves the pickup was closer to the neck. At the time everyone touted it as the better of the two single pickup models. You never see or hear about those anymore.

In the 2013 catalog these had model numbers that not only represented the amount of pickups but also the finish.

2210 single pup non burst
2214 single pup burst
2220 double pup non burst
2224 double pup burst

I do not think they do that anymore?

That script still throws me for a loop though. It should say 'Gretsch' horizontal and 'Electromatic' vertical

The 2020 catalog still uses 2220 for non-burst finishes and 2224 for Tobacco burst finishes

White pickguard is also throwing things off. I think this is a modded 2210 by the owner?

That pup is also in an odd spot.

I searched earlier catalogs to 2006. I only saw these in the 2013 and newer catalogs on the Gretsch website.

The bridge is placed much lower and there appears to be only 19 frets as opposed to 20 frets?

I do believe it is the earlier 2202: the bridge on those is a lot closer to the edge of the body than on all those you listed. Also, 19 frets (with the last one being somewhat of a hard reach) instead of 20.

The headstock makes me wonder if it's a knockoff, but I don't know much about Gretsch basses. All the ones in the photos appear to say Gretsch on them.

The earliest definite mention here on TB:Basses[BG] is from August 2002 (an earlier one from Oct '01 may or may not be about the same bass - the model is not specified); however, most pics from that era are down. The earliest images I could find here are from 2009. More here, here and here. Other members noted the absence of the model in catalogs around that time.

There was also the (allegedly more expensive) Synchromatic line, with a G1212, G1222 (two pickups, as depicted here) and G1232 (two pickups and long-scale) according to [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] (bottom of the page), and also a post of yours. I suppose the G1212 could be confused with the G2202, but it came in a blackburst finish as opposed to solid black (EDIT: or was the latter also blackburst?).

The more recent version, with the moved bridge and the faux humbuckers, was announced in late 2011.

Bottom line is they suck at naming basses. : /

Very early version of that model. They sound really good. It's a bona-fide gretsch.

2202, old single pickup model, bridge is closer to the edge of the body, white pickguard. These sound good, and feel good, upper frets are hard to reach if you care about that.

never owned one, but used to play one at a local music store each time I was in there

that said, they're asking $500??? I've seen a couple of these go on shopgoodwill.com and guitarcenter used for closer to $300 within the last year
