It's odd though, this bass has a set neck but the body wood and neck wood seem to be the same.

Someone solve my mystery please! I've been wondering about this thing for about a year now, lol. It's has pronounced mids and seems dense.

It looks to me like walnut or possibably mahogany. But it seems like mahogany seems to have more of a deep red tint and this is more of a dark brown.

Definitely mahogany. I've owned 3 mahogany guitars/basses and they all have that same grain pattern. Mahogany is a bit heavy, but not the heaviest. It has a fat smooth nasally sound that with the right electronics can sound great. It's best paired with a harder wood such as padauk or maple.

I'm going to go with this as well. Tight grain pattern that looks like ash to me, and I'm guessing it's on the heavier side.

+1. First thing i thought was 'hmm, mahogony', then 3sec later 'colored ash'. Check some other (natural) ash basses, IMO its ash.

The body's shape & color are almost identical to my old Ibanez Musician - that bass has an Ash top with a dark stain applied before the clear top coat, and I'll bet money this one is Ash too. Is your bass an old Ibanez?

I believe you are correct, and Ibanez used to manufacture the necks & bodies for the old Roland guitar/bass synths. Definitely NOT Mahogany - look at some Gibson SG guitars for examples of Mahogany.
