saw some folks setting up for a big meeting. giant upper case letters spelled m, i, s, and d. the 'd' was reversed. some guy in a tie saw it and had the heavy lifters turn the letter around properly. that's why the pay him the big bucks--he knows which way the 'd' goes.

Maybe the quotes are supposed to mean "we know we're misspelling this, trying to be funny". Or maybe they mean "we don't really mean "Welcome"". I hate quotes misused for emphasis. So 2 errors right there. I give it a D-.

We have misspelled signs like that all over our school. Most are created by teachers. I do go around and correct the spelling. In fact, I had to correct two for the "College Fair" the week before Thanksgiving. One was spelled "Collage Fair". The other was "College Fare". Both were done by the teacher in charge of the college prep courses and who happened to be last year's teacher of the year. I was reprimanded for making the corrections as it was (apparently) humiliating to the teacher. Then again she is always sending emails out with misspelled words, poorly structured sentences, and lacking any form of punctuation. Oh, and the signs were approved by the principal and had his signature at the bottom. I guess he didn't proofread them either. Yes, I work with idiots and I do fear for the education of our youth.

I regularly go through emails written by elementary school teachers. Let's just say I'm typically less than impressed by what I see where language skills are concerned.

If there's anything I've learned working at an elementary school it's that you mustn't, under any circumstances, make a person feel bad. Humiliation has no place in school because it might make a person - student or teacher - a victim with damaged self-esteem, and we can't have that in magical happy-land.
