I would appreciate that any of you keep and further distastefull remarks private as he was a great guy, a great player, and made this bass out of necessity; he was also a friend to many of us here.

Funny how the mud slingers never have credentials to match those they flog.
Many would say that Hendrix and Townsend were dead beats for destroying perfectly good guitars on stage.

Reading some of the commentary, you'd think we were talking about Kenny 'G' rather than

Danny 'G'.

It's just a bass that Gatton modified. It's more interesting now that some folks have chimed in who knew Gatton better.

All I know is what I saw on 2 occasions: Awesome performances by Danny Gatton and a band of great musicians that still inspires me to this day.

Are you suggesting that in order to issue criticism, one has to reach the level of accomplishment of the person being critiqued? That seems a bit absurd. Certainly, a requirement like that would wipe out the occupation of "critic" entirely.

Nope, but having an actual bit of your own tallent gives you a hell of lot more credibility when you decide to put your critic hat on.

A critic with zero credentials of his own... well... we the reader get to process that and take that critics words for what they actually are worth.

I certainly would weigh someone with genuine playing credentials opinion quite a bit higher than someone who's a bedroom player, or a non- playing gear horder.

Example: Albert Lee and Vince Gill seem to think that Danny Gatton is an amazing musician.

I the reader will process that against what I know of Albert and Mr. Gills careers , style and level of achievement.

SMCD seems to think Gatton's playing is "nothing special".

I the reader will process that against what I know of SMCD's career, style and level of achievment. (basicly unknown)

Then I will listen with my own ears and see who's opinion holds more water.

In this case... it ain't a tough decision. ;)

You certainly have every right to voice your opinion, and we have every right to couner it.

Let the readers decide.

There would only be iron if I hadn't heard DGatton's music. But as I have, we are absent irony. Unless you're making another point??

You go on here trashing some musician, seem surprised that most people here disagree, and then get all butthurt when the same sorts of things are said about a musician you like.

For the record, I'm not really a fan of Gatton's work. Just not my cup of tea, but really like the Dead Kennedys.

But your manner is simply inexcusable. You're being a jerk and you have been behaving that way for the whole thread.

Way off topic, but check out the foam mute by the bridge on Klaus' P bass.

That's how i figured out the foam mute for my bass -- that actual video. Love old Klaus Voorman.

I would still buy that old Gatton bass and fix 'er up. i bet it sounds good.

Blimey! Is this thread still rumbling on!?

Let's remind ourselves how it all started ....

A (low level)celebrity-owned novelty instrument. It has been butchered.

Now, I would say that there is nothing at all wrong with that statement and certainly nothing malicious or insulting towards any individual :hmm:. The poster has acknowledged that Mr. Gatton was indeed a celebrity, albeit not a very major one, and his use of the adjective "butchered" is pretty reasonable in the circumstances.

Then we progress to this stage, where other members actually break the user rules of the forum by hurling very pointed insults at other members, just because they either disagree or wish to be seen as defending the majority view :( ...

This thread really needs to be closed, IMO :scowl:.
