Nothing has been lost on me. He was a player's player. I suspect the problem is that you're easily impressed. His "contributions" aren't all that noteworthy. So he garnered a lot of high profile admirers. So what? Name a Danny Gatton song.

How about Sky King on Unfinished Business . Very tasetfull playing, and one of my favorites.

The problem is that I'm easliy impressed. Well, I guess if Les Paul is impressed by him , as well as Albert Lee, then I guess I'm in pretty good company. ;)

Never cared for the Foo Fighters. I liked the White Stripes plenty when the first couple records came out, but the latest WStripes record make me want to smash my cd player.

If I start with naming what kind of music I listen to, it will start a s**t-slinging contest, so there's no point in that. But I'll bite -

Klaus Flouride is a great, underappreciated bass player.

Nope, no S**T Slinging. Just trying to figure out where on earth you're coming from. Considering your profile is just a list of basses, that really doesn't give us too much of a frame of referances for your opinions.

Smcd, your arrogance concerning Danny Gatton isn't needed. I'm sure Gatton never heard of you and as far as I know your contribution to my world of music is less than zero. Reading through your posts it seems your intent is to be inflammatory without offering anything constructive.

I appreciate the talents of musicians such as Gatton and others like him that they didn't quite cut through the mainstream. It makes it that more appealing to me. As being one of those "blues dads", I appreciate the talent of someone expressing himself and making their on path than trying to be a copy of the latest "shredder" who will soon fall into obscurity.

The Grammy's and the Rolling Stone polls reflect the tastes of the modern consumer being fed by the music labels. Many fine musicians have received Grammy awards as well as recognition in the Rolling Stone polls as well as many who haven't.

Back to the bass that started the thread. It is an interesting piece. Not all instruments are destined to be collector item. He had a need or a desire to modify the bass for his purpose at the time, not for the future. To restore this bass still wouldn't make it as valuable before his modification. I would imagine it would be valuable to a fan of Gatton to own a piece of his history.

Nearly all bass players know who James Jamerson is. EVERY single fan of metal knows who Geezer Butler is. Buddy Rich is widely known among those of an older generation. Gatton isn't in that strata.

I didn't say "bass player" or "metal fan." You said passersby, so that was the same criteria I used. I'd say most people would not know who the hell James Jamerson is.

Ten foot tall, bullet-proof, omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent. The internet is worse than alcohol for inspiring arrogance. I guess if you can pull .50 cent words out of your arse and come off like a pseudo-intellectual punk, it gives you the right to be disrespectful. Too bad the logic doesn't match the vocabulary.

But the following pretty much demonstrates everything I need to know:

Klaus Flouride:

Yeah, that guy's overrated. He didn't have any hits and passersby don't know who he is. His contribution to music is negligible. Right. Whatever.

Couldn't make it through Klaus Flouride's video. Gatton has talent for sure. Just confirmed my opinion, that the dissenting opinion here in this thread is irrelevant. Just someone who wants to stir things up.

Thank you all who have reminded me of Danny Gatton and his music; in a positive way. I didn't know him, I'm too young for starters, but I know people who did, he's important as a human being and a musician.

IMO the bass is a piece of history and I agree with the sentiment that hip music was made on it, with the modifications.

After looking up the definition of the word forum in the dictionary, the word assembly came up which conjures the image of order, which reminds of the moderators.

Nearly all bass players know who James Jamerson is.

Yeah, all it took was a guy putting out a book about how unappreciated he was.And then spending the next ten years trying to get funding to make a movie so people would know about this forgotten genius.

I dare say that this will eventually happen wth Gatton.

Klaus Flouride? Wow,he must suck since I never heard of his name before!

I do know the Dead Kennedys tho.............

Edit: You may have skipped over this: Danny Gatton wasn't trying to play music to a mass audience. He played the music he wanted to play.If he had wanted mass approval and Top 40 play I'm sure he could have taken steps to achieve that.He could have become a side man or joined a rootsy rock type band and gained a wider exposure. But he didn't,he played what he wanted to play, made a decent living doing it,and was well respected among his peers.

A (low level)celebrity-owned novelty instrument. It has been butchered.

:scowl::rollno::scowl::rollno::(

This is where the rubbish started, and it's a kind of straw argument.

Danny Gatton is well known and well respected amongst MUSICIANS, as has been evidenced by this thread. The word "celebrity" was poorly chosen, and dragged many into a false debate with someone trying out for troll status.

==============

To answer the OP's question, if I had done that, the bass would be indeed be considered "butchered", but when a player with the reputation of Gatton does it, the instrument will still fetch a high price. If I were a collector, I'd love to have Gatton's bass, and would pay a premium for it. When guests would ask about the strange bass on the wall, I'd tell them a story and play them a couple records....

dangit, i read through the entire thread with the idea of posting this!

my $.02:

I've never heard of this guy before this thread. I checked out a number of videos, and tbqh, I wasn't really impressed. I'm sure he was influential to a number of famous guitarists ... but why should that automatically make me hold him to such a high regard that some of you seem to be expecting?

You think that's disrespectful? I couldn't care less, it's my opinion. I think that some of you are forgetting that opinions are a personal thing ... and this thread if chock FULL of opinions, and you're all spouting them off like facts.

You like the guy? Cool.

You don't like the guy? Fine by me.

Aaaaaand, the bass is pretty fugly if you ask me.

You were able to say you don't like his playing w/out being obnoxious.

and you're all spouting them off like facts.

Yes, it's a FACT that millions of musicians and fans hold Gatton in high esteem. If we look at the OP's original question, that's what matters here. Let's review:

OP's first post said:
Now, admit it: if this was on eBay, without the name, a lot of vintage buffs would be screaming "Butcher!!"

But this bass is a Gatton bass, and is on sale at Gruhn's in Nashville...so I guess it's history. What do you all think?

Yes, the bass was owned by a guitar great, so it's history, and it will sell at a higher price than if an average person had modified it. So Luke19Boarder, it doesn't matter whether you respectfully don't like his music, or whether another guy on this thread disrespectfully dislikes his music.
