If Danny Gatton Did it..Does that make it Okay??

smdc still hasn't addressed the point several posters have made that if you asked the average person on the street who Jaco Pastorius and John Entwistle were or who Pino Palladino or Victor Wooten are, they wouldn't know either.

As for the bass... P-basses aren't really my thing, but if they were, I'd either convert it back to 4 strings and take the guitar tuner out or replace the guitar tuner, bridge and nut and make it more normal 5.

Danny Gatton was quite the tinkerer, I used to know this bass player that wrote songs with Danny, he gave me a bass bridge that Danny made. And yes, he might have been the greatest guitar player in the world. I am not saying he turned the instrument on it's ear, like Hendrix or Vanhalen, but there are fewer guitar players out there that were as fluid as he was.
Winning a Grammy is pretty big deal, I am sure that if a Grammy award nominated singer contacted you about playing bass you would sit up and take notice, perhaps even call your friends and say something like "I just got a call from a Grammy nominated singer about being their bass player!" If you think it's no big deal, go win one yourself and tell me how easy it was.
I bet that bass sounds pretty good

You think he obnoxious in this thread...I can only imagine what that thread would sound like....:bassist:

The logic here is that being disrespcetful of the guys obvious tallent, and being oblivious to his contributions, even after explained to you, seems rather trollish.

You could have simply said something like "I'm not a fan of that type of playing" or "I've never heard of the guy" and I'm sure no one would be bothered by that, but that's not the path that you chose.

Gatton also had a reputation for modifying the daylights out of his instruments, so this bass should come as no shock to anyone familar with him.

"Disrespectful of talent"??? Could you elaborate on that?

His "contributions" were not adequately explained. Or, perhaps, his "contributions" were explained and were actually found by me to be rather insignificant by any reasonable standard.

I am a fan of that type of playing when done tastefully. I have heard of the guy. As I mentioned earlier, I've heard his music. That's precisely why I don't like Gatton.

Gatton is an icon of a niche group. Which - back to my original point - doesn't really qualify him as a "celebrity".

The point was not in need of addressing, but since you asked...

Entwistle is almost a household name. Anyone who owned a record by the Who, or who was even mildly familiar with rock music would know who John Entwistle was.

Pastorious and especiallly Paladino aren't celebrities. Niche group icons. Just like Gatton.

Well, if the Fender Custom Shop make a signature guitar with his name on (as they did), then that makes him enough of a celebrity for me :p!

Seriously though, smcd, you're never going to win this arguement, as the way it works on this forum is that when somebody dies, they largely become 'beyond criticism'.

It's quite a unique phenomenon to forum users over here in Europe, where by and large we're all free to say what we like and other people are free to agree or disagree. Sorry if that seems trollish, mods, but it happens to be true ;).

oof!!!!

Should we have a "Fight Pit" section on TB into which we can drop these kinds of exchanges? That way, if they're funny we can still check them out, but otherwise we can just get back to the talkin' 'bout the bass. :hmm: and the people having the conversation can continue as they wish.

Here ya go...
Being the 63rd greatest guitar player according to *oof* Rolling Stone is kinda like, well... that and a buck-fitty will get you a cup of coffee.

The only people who know who Danny Gatton was are, for the most part, dad blues guitar player types. Sorry, but that doesn't get you on the A-list. Or B-list. Or C-list.
That's pretty disrespectful of a guy who's tallents are clearly far beyond the vast majority of players, both proffesional and amateur alike.

It's also a gross and ill thought out generalization of the people who appreciate Gattons contributions.

Specifically. I mean, if it's just being a good player, then that's not really much of a contribution.

I and others have explaind that his particular style didn't really exist untill Gatton put all the parts together. Even a list of high profile players listed as fans of his tallent and playing seems lost on you.

Granted you may not like it, nor appreciate it, but the contributions have been noted, and you chose to ignore that.

By what "reasonable standard" do we need to meet for your extremely high standards of acceptable contributions to music in general? I guess being a groundbreaking inovator in that particular style... one that has been an inspiration to quite a few notable, and non notable players doesn't meet your high standards.

1.) The bass is "butchered" by collectors standard...but it was customized to create some great music :)

2.) Danny Gatton is a celebrity guitarist who is very talented and had his own unique sound. That is a proven FACT. :smug:

3.) There are some TBers who posted on this thread who are just ignorant and disrespectful. As my mother said there is "no excuse for bad manners".:smug:

oof!!!!

I'm cool with the Foo Fighters and The White Stripes.

What catagory was your band not nominated in? ;)
(smart allek way of asking what kind of music you find acceptable, as there's not much of a clue from your profile)

Danny was a personal friend of mine and he worked on a few of my guitars & basses . He was a dear friend and great guitarist and nobody on TB will ever change my mind of that. You had to know the person and most people didn't know him or were clueless to what he could do with a guitar. A pure inovator and one of a kind.

A Danny Gatton quote told to me by Danny over a beer in Sam's Crab House in Clinton , Md. Circa 1979:
There's an ass for every seat !
R.I.P. Danny

Generalizations are called that because the statements in question are generally true.

I don't need to respect a guy who has talent. It's not the talent, but what you do with it. Gatton really didn't do anything noteworthy with his talent. He was just a guy who could play well.

What makes you think "talent" is all that special? How is it that you don't see that there are countless people out there with "talent" in playing an instrument? It's not that big a deal.

Nothing has been lost on me. He was a player's player. I suspect the problem is that you're easily impressed. His "contributions" aren't all that noteworthy. So he garnered a lot of high profile admirers. So what? Name a Danny Gatton song.

He was an innovator? So what? There are thousands of "innovators" out there. The "impact" he made wasn't even measurable. Instead of going on wikipedia and copying and pasting his fan base, how about you tell me a significant impact he made on music?

Not being a household name doesn't mean one wasn't an important musical figure. How many people that you ask randomly on a street would know who James Jamerson is? Or even Geezer Butler? Or Buddy Rich?

Nearly all bass players know who James Jamerson is. EVERY single fan of metal knows who Geezer Butler is. Buddy Rich is widely known among those of an older generation. Gatton isn't in that strata.

Never cared for the Foo Fighters. I liked the White Stripes plenty when the first couple records came out, but the latest WStripes record make me want to smash my cd player.

If I start with naming what kind of music I listen to, it will start a s**t-slinging contest, so there's no point in that. But I'll bite -

Klaus Flouride is a great, underappreciated bass player.
