If god gave you $2,500 to spend ..

If god gave me $2500 to spend.... it certainly wouldn't be on a bass. Just imagine the pressure having received money from god ... it’s kinda like a test - it’d be Biblical.

After getting over my disbelief - born again as it were - I’d take my time - gods got time - it would have to be a totally selfless expenditure - god - that’s a tough one - oops blasphemy.

This after I asked him for a few hundred more:

Probably a Fender Tony Franklin fretless in Lake Placid Blue or Sunburst. I'd use the leftover money for
  • a different pickguard if Lake Placid Blue, or cream pickup covers if Sunburst
  • replacing the tuners and xTender with the Hipshot Ultralight equivalent
  • replace vol/tone with the improved Best Bass Gear version of stack-knob controls
  • a 4-way switch instead of the 3-way (to add series mode)
  • getting the neck slimmed a bit so it's somewhere between standard modern P and J profile

Hmm. The thing is, I don’t really need any more basses.

I do have a bit of a Jones for an electric fretless, but I already have an acoustic fretless I hardly use. Still, free money and all...
So, I could see if I could have the Fender custom shop make me an unlined fretless American Performer Mustang with nitro finish (and undercoat) in surf green. It would be a bit of a waste, but it would also be something that would be quite cool. I’m not sure what that would cost, but hopefully $2,500 would cover it.

Alternatively, I could see what $2,500 would get me in a white 60s EB-3.

Two other possibilities would be:

- buy a used Thunderbird in very good to excellent condition and put in a set of traditional 60s-Thunderbird-style pickups (along with probably some other upgrades, possibly to be done later)

- buy a Les Paul Jr. DC Tribute bass and switch out the pickup for a 60s-Thunderbird-style pickup and the bridge for a Hipshot

Well, if it has to be a bass, it's a Birdsong rear routed Corto 2, with a dragon head turquoise inlay.

If I could spend it on what I really want, it would be a mesa TT 800, with a mid '80s MIJ rear routed Fender series E jazz.

Either way I would be happy

I’d build a nice parts bass... or two, depending on how much money is left over. (I think $2500 AUD would be enough for one really nice bass build, and one budget bass build)

However you’re obviously talking in USD, so 2500 USD comes to 3602 AUD, so in that case I could probably build 2 nice parts basses and buy a really nice, but not over the top Ampeg rig.

Since I have no need or desire for more basses I'd try to renegotiate the deal so I could just put the cash in my get out of town by sundown stash. If that didn't work out I'd get the maximum bang for my bass buck, sell it and put the money in my get out of town by sundown stash.
