With the nut removed I did up to the first fret quickly and easily with my trusty Shinto.

One down, 21 to go. Don't worry, I won't be posting each one individually.
One side down one to go. This is as far as I'm going to go with the file. I'll use my fret bar to fine-tune from here. This was both quicker and easier than I expected it to be.
Nice work! You've got the idea. To me, files are still the fundamental Luthier tool. For both woodworking and metalworking.
Thank you. It really wasn't difficult. Just needed a bit of patience. I was glad that you pointed out about only going in one direction. I can see how someone could carelessly pull a fret out.

I am not a luthier by any means but I studied sculpting in collage, and I like the challenge! I got two Yamaha RBX270 basses (fretted and fretless) that I'd like to do the same thing on. This thread is encouraging

If I had let that stop me this thread wouldn't exist.
Honestly, as a sculptor, I would think you would be much more experienced in shaping things the way you want them than I am.

Go slowly, have patience. When you start to think, "Man, if I just (insert amazing wood removal idea) this could be done quick!" Then set the tools down, leave the vicinity and come back when you settle down.
I spend most of my internet time on the phone these days, so I never saw your signature before. Your band is really, REALLY great. Your playing is perfectly suited to it. Laid back and in the pocket throughout but able to throw down in the moments that call for it.
I'm a hack bassist just like I'm a hack luthier, but I'm always happy to meet people who know what they are doing.
