If Ricks Are So Coveted...Why Are They So Cheap?

Sorry to inform you that prices on those have dropped... I've had the chance to snag a few for $1700 locally. The other thing that has changed is they are two-piece necks now. I'm glad you like your bass.

2009 List price has them at 2729 but that's cool I'd pay it again for my BBR :)

Agreed - totally subjective. Everyone loves their chosen basses regardless of price. RIC's are class, have never been made anywhere but the US and will always be played by those who love them for that RIC tone.

I fell in love with Ric's before I even knew what they were when I saw Al Cisneros playing one with Sleep. The cost is kinda high for my finances, but doable with some scrimping and saving. I just wish they made five strings, I don't really like fours.

No. There was a 4003S/5 model and a 4004Cii/5 model; the Cii/5 had a brief history but the S/5 had a nice run for several years and is generally a well-regarded bass, the only weird thing about it is narrow string spacing but some people really liked that about it. It had a great tone. They are spendy *now*, but back in the day they weren't that bad.

Funny, though I'm fairly new here, I've been a member of the Ric Resource forum for some time now, and I continue to be amazed at most Talk Bass forumite's polarization over Ric basses - seems most folks here either love or hate them, with not many in between.

My point? Not really sure, but I do find it very interesting.

Dude that's how Rics are though.

There is no in between usually at all.

They're so distinct...you either hear them and go I NEED THIS or :eyebrow:

I've had 4 Rics, so I think I'm entitled to say that I believe they are way overpriced for what they are. There was a time that no one wanted them. That was around my third Ric. It was a 100% mint 1983 mapleglo 4003 with black binding and split PG and factory case. I paid around 500 new in '83. I had it listed for a while, before I got 700 for it around 1997-98.
My biggest beef with the company is the lack of colors, and options like the old days. I'm bored with the black (though it is classic), blue, and fireglo. I can't handle seeing the white trim on a mapleglo. The nicest one I had was a walanut finish with the black binding & PG I was able to order. I think if Ric was able to offer some of these SIMPLE options, I'd pay up to 1200 (street) for a new one, but no more.
