I saw a Cuban band here in Lima, Peru last night (wife was born here) and what a great band it was. They rocked Salsa and Bolero if that's possible, the bass player who was excellent had a fretless 5 string bass, didn't see a name on the headstock. Seeing that band was like going back in time to the Cuban 50's and 60's, no synthesizers on that stage. Some of the poorer Spanish countries tend to be very good at mickey mousing things like cars, bases and guitars. I once bought a a 70's SVT head here for 300 bucks, it had all old 6L6's in it from Fender amps, it actually worked and the tubes didn't heat up. It had not been modded which is what surprised me.

And a lot of those old American cars over there have been kept on the road with engine and mechanical swaps, so a '57 Chevy might have a Russian diesel engine.

And I would love to visit there. I've heard the reefs on the southern coast are some of the best diving in the Caribbean.

Yes. I did see one of those and it is bizzare to hear that diesel hum under the hood of an old classic

When I backpacked through Mexico in college, I spent Easter in a little fishing village on the Yucatan. The band playing the Easter eve dance guitar player had a Les Paul with abalone binding that had been stripped and stained light brown (looked a little like Bob Marley's but lighter).

Spoke to the player, and was able to get the story that a furniture maker had taken the finish off (nitro) and replaced the binding with abalone (cheap down there). Very unique looking, and one day I'm going to build a kit with that body binding.
