If you could have TWO and ONLY TWO basses..

If I hadda have just one bass that could do it all-or come real damn close-it'd be a trust old G&L L1000.
One massive humbucker in a great spot, switchable for dual coil, single coil, and single coil with bass boost. Vol/treb/bass controls...it can cover everything from Motown P-Bass thump to Flea-esque slap-yo-mama.

I won't count my upright as a second bass
So, here's what I'd take for my second at this point.
Lakland 5501...
It's active, which makes it different from the G&L. It's loaded with Nord DC5's and Laklands new LH3 preamp. Coil taps for each pup are single coil/parallel/series...there's a lot of voices in there:

I had to vote for Music Man, because I really love my StingRay, but I also would have liked to vote for Warwick, because I really love my CS Corvette Proline.

My main bass is actually my 1992 Fender Jazz Plus V, but the only reason I haven't retired it is that I haven't yet acquired a replacement, and the StingRay and Warwick are both for specialized purposes. They are, however, both much nicer than my Fender, despite the fact that the Jazz Plus V was Fender's top of the line bass in 1992.

I want at least another StingRay, fretted with piezo, and probably another fretless like the one I already have for experiments. The Warwick is awesome, but now I wish I had the piezo for that, so I may commission another from the Warwick Custom Shop, also for experiments.

To replace the Jazz Plus V, I'm thinking two Warmoth Deluxe 5 Jazz basses, built similarly to my Jazz Plus V but better, one fretted, and one fretless.

My two main basses are my new ritter classic, just got it a couple of months ago here on talkbass, and my Lakland 55-02 fretless, picked it up for nothing in one of those wierd, "you'll never believe this" storys. The Ritter is amazingly versatile, I'm still finding distinct usable tones out of her,..and the lakland is pure fretless sex on the kitchen table!! And since I just snapped new photo's today of them........

I have to rule on the side of sentimentality my daughter bought me a beautiful Red LTD for my birthday maybe there are better ones out there but her picking this bass is special to me soit stays till death do us part and then my green Hofner as a player my middleaged back requires a light weight axe and being 1 of 150 it might have added value later on.I have more instruments come and go but sentimentality and great looks sound and playability make these my choice for only 2
