If I hadda have just one bass that could do it all-or come real damn close-it'd be a trust old G&L L1000.
One massive humbucker in a great spot, switchable for dual coil, single coil, and single coil with bass boost. Vol/treb/bass controls...it can cover everything from Motown P-Bass thump to Flea-esque slap-yo-mama.
I won't count my upright as a second bass
So, here's what I'd take for my second at this point.
Lakland 5501...
It's active, which makes it different from the G&L. It's loaded with Nord DC5's and Laklands new LH3 preamp. Coil taps for each pup are single coil/parallel/series...there's a lot of voices in there:
