Cozy Powell was an incredible drummer. I played bass guitar on the late Cozy Powell's hit single "The Man In Black" and the B-side "After Dark" produced by Mickie Most in 1975. I played Mickie's white Fender P bass with foam rubber tucked under the strings, as he always liked to record bass guitar, no ringing notes. As a producer he preferred just a thumping sound. We used an Ampeg B 15 amp. I've played with a lot of drummers, but Cozy had a huge powerful unique approach, and it was a lot of fun playing with him.

I'm a little surprised to see all the Ringo responses. I'm not saying that he's not iconic nor putting him down, but, well, I don't know. I guess I'd be just as surprised to see Meg White. To each his own. ...

Man, ask any super pro/jazz drummer (except Purdie) what they think about Ringo's playing. His impeccable time was the factor that made it possible for the Beatles to splice together so many different takes in their experimental phase.

Yes, he was fantastic and would be on my short list.

Dennis Chambers is my model drummer. The time, the heavy kick foot, and the ability to play effectively across styles.

Carter Beauford and Dennis Chambers are more similar than different - he's on my list too.

This is a mouthful. If you were to play with Steve Gadd, he would be smart and cooperative enough to hear you and make you sound good. If you play with Alex Van Halen (who hasn't been mentioned, I don't think), you'd be trying to do his thing.
