Alembic Series II 5-string fretted and Alembic Series II 5-string fretless. That would cover it. I'd be able to emulate nearly any bass out there pretty closely.

That's an easy one: Sell the wife, and have more than 6 basses.
I don't impose rules on my wife, and she doesn't do this to me.

Funny you should ask, I recently cut down my 31 bass ukes/mini bass guitars to six bass ukes, 21" scale with flatwound nylon core and piezo bridge/pickup replacements on the 5 violin style.

I've got seven, listed here in order of current use:

1. Kay upright
2. Ibanez 6 string fretless
3. Fender jazz 70s reissue
4. Fender PJ fretless (MiJ)
5. Tribute L-2500
6. SBMM Ray 4
7. '76 Fender P

I could pretty much live with just the top three for the kinds of music I like to play, no problem. The bottom three definitely add some range for other styles, so I guess the fretless PJ would be the odd bass out.

Hm. I have a few basses already, but some are the same model (2 Fender Ps and 2 Fender Js). If they had to be different:
1) Fender Jazz 4 (preferably US)
2) Fender P 4 (preferably US)
3) Rickenbacker 4003 (despite them being a pain in the arse to play; the sound is everything)
4) Musicman Stingray 4
5) Olinto P
6) Short-scale bass - most likely the Musicman Stingray short scale.

File these answers under 'conventional'. But they work.

I guess I don't really understand the requirements here. These lists all look like the typical TB love for 7ender basses, and if you don't have those you'll never have "the right" basses.
In my life, my 6 would be more like this -

Marleaux Diva 4 fretless

5 - Jack Bruce's Gibson EB3
6 - John Entwistle's Frankenstein Fender P bass

Then I would sell them all for the maximum amount and then I would go on a buying spree and get about 50 basses and pocket the extra money.

My wife doesn't dictate such things, but if I wanted to keep it to six basses, they'd be a P, a J, a StingRay (Special), a Rickenbacker, a Hofner and probably a Sadowsky.

At least weight isn't as much of a concern with the double mothra as it is with mothman. You can always rest it on the ground while playing the upper neck

I explained to my wife that I need variety somewhere in my life. I could have multiple basses or multiple women. She told me I could have as many basses as I want. But I don't really have all that many.

A lot of those basses owners' died early. And I've heard McCartney's is essentially unplayable - ridiculously high action. You sure you want to own those things?
