I would first pick the 4 that I already have:
1-2. My 2 Rickenbacker 4003s
3. My Fender MIA P Bass
4. My Squier Piccolo Jazz Bass

Then, I would pick:
5. Another high end bass - probably either a Rickenbacker 4004 or a Serek Sacramento (custom made to my specifications)
6. A fretless bass - probably either an Ibanez Portamento, a Sire fretless P Bass, or a Rickenbacker 4001FL / 4003FL (if I can find one)

I'm in the midst of a big gear purge, so now I am actually down to six.

1. Fender PJ with rounds
2. Fender P with flats
3. Fender Marcus Miller Jazz with rounds
4. Fender Jaguar Bass with tapes
5. Yamaha TRB5II 5 string with rounds
6. Ibanez Acoustic Bass with phosphors


The PJ and Jazz cover "modern' tones, while the P with flats and Jag are more 'vintage' sounding. I rotate through those depending on the gig and what I am feeling. The Yamaha is sticking around as I need a nice 5'er and the Acoustic is purely sentimental as my parents bought it for me when I was in high school.

I am also keeping my Shen SB150 Upright.

I'd love to play a bunch of high end Jazz basses and pick out a nice one to keep. I have to keep my current main J bass and my Player P. I really dig the both of them. I'd def keep my old Ibby Roadstar. My T-40. And this Dan Armstrong bass.

So, lets say your wife said you can have 6 basses, obviously in a perfect world we all want one of everything, but hypothetically lets say you could have 6 and you wanted the widest spectrum of basses. Lets say you already have an Epiphone Rivoli so you have the Gibson Mudbucker sound, you have a 4003 so you have that, you have a P bass so you have that. Obviously you would need a J bass as #4, and I'm guessing some kind of Stingray for #5, but what would 6 be? Thunderbird? Hofner? Dingwall? Some kind of acoustic with a piezo? Some kind of 5 string?

Nothing you mentioned has a lot of appeal to me and I've definitely never wanted one of everything. But in the spirit of your question: one great upright, one fretless BG, and maybe one fretted one for a preamp test bed.

First, I'll give you the answer that I give everyone that asks the "if you could only have..." question. Which is;
If I can't have the 23 basses that it's taken me THIRTY+ YEARS to acquire? Then, I won't have ANY. I'll just use the time I spend now, playing; practicing; and maintaining them, by riding my Harley even more, and spending more time at the range, practicing with my rifles, pistols, and shotguns. Cause, Gawd knows that they do cut into my ridin' and shootin' time - a lot...
Next; my wife? Sorry, but she packed all her junk and one of the dogs into my Ford F-150 King Cab 4x4, and went home to Mommy about... 25 years ago, now. I'm happy; she's happy (at least she was, when I talked to her a couple of weeks ago); so I'm free as air to do as I please. However...
You did sorta ask nicely, so... for argument's sake, I'll answer. But, first of all? No such thing as a left handed Rivoli Bass - and, trust me; I spent decades looking. "Left handed" is why it took me so long to complete the herd... In any case; yes, some of the basses you posited are in my herd, as part of a short list of particular basses that I wanted. So, I suppose my 6 might be;

1. The maybe-one-of-a-kind '01 COY Rickenbacker 4003;
2. The 2019 EBMM 4hh Stingray Special;
3. The 2013 Gibson Thunderbird;
4. The 2017 German Hofner 500/2 Club Bass (lefties are German-only). The other 2?
5. One of the 2 '98 Danelectro DC59 Pros - the one with the La Bella 760FX flats. And,
6. The 2020 Guild Starfire I Bass.
Which answers your question, and satisfies your parameters. And, which would leave me very unhappy. Maybe even unhappy enough to focus my practicing on my 5-string, long scale, 1963 "Boulder-made" ODE banjo. And, when all the neighbors complain? I'll give 'em your name...

this is definetly tough

1) (This is the only one I currently own) 2014 MIM Fender Jazz with DiMarzio Model Js and Flats (Super sentimental for me since its my first bass and has a unique sound for a jazz bass)
2) Some sort of Vintage 60s/70s Fender P bass with flats
3) Some sort of modern P or PJ type of thing (Like the fender Ultra series P bass) with rounds
4) Some sort of active/boutique 5 string (F bass, MTD, ect) with rounds
5) A vintage hollow body with flats or tapes
6) An altier Z 4 String with rounds
