Yes. If I were to have only one bass, it would be a P bass. It is only a one trick pony if YOU only know one trick.

While the heritage of P and J basses is undeniable, a PJ can do it all. Maybe I'm biased because my first bass was a PJ, but there is a versatility in that setup that makes a dedicated P or J seem inadequate to me. Quality pickups can make a big difference in that equation, of course.

I'm not a P hater by any means but if I'm already going to be limited to ONLY ONE BASS?????? I certainly want that bass to be as tonally versitile as possible.
Even my 706 that I might play a couple times a year, has been modified for maximum tonal flexibility.

A Pbass would be my second choice by a very slight margin. Vintage 60s Thunderbird would my first choice (or a 60s Epi Embassy). If not those, Pbass all the way to tone heaven.

If I could get back my '62 AVRI that was stolen from me, then yes, I could die happy with that bass. Barring that, no, I've transitioned to Thunderbird IIs.

My standard reply to this "only have one" question is "Then I wouldn't have any. I'd sell everything, and ride off into the sunset on this". But, you did ask nicely, and since you say you want stats?
Then, I'd have to say - not a P-Bass. I do have one; an A-necked '78. My first bass; plays like a P-Bass should; lots of sentimental value, too. But... no. I'd have to go with this one; my '95 Alembic Epic. 'Cause, really; who would leave their Alembic behind?

I had a P bass (1979 sunburst, rosewood board) bought new in 79. £500 in UK at the time. Worst bass I've ever had. As my dad said, "for something called precision, it isnt". I agree. My first bass was a Hondo 2 Ric copy from a catalogue. Much better build for a 5th of the price. Better sound too. Had loads of different basses since then. Every single one sounds better than that P bass. Well, apart from the 2 Squier 5 strings, they were rubbish as well. My fave bass I don't use anymore as only 5 made and I have the number 2.
