Here's my 2: a 1974 Precision with Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats and a 2018 Gibson Thunderbird with Ernie Ball Nickel Rounds. These two cover everything from thump to angry piano.

I only have two and never anymore (except the one that does not count becuase it's boxed up ready for a sale in the classifieds.

And it's changed over the years.

First: was an Aria Pro II SB Elite II and Spector NS-2A
then: 2 spector NS-2A
Then: Spector NS-2A and Ric 4001
Then: I was only down to one the Spector NS-2A
Then: No Spector and a 6 string BTB
Then: BTB and a Lakland DJ4
Then: Lakland DJ4 and Aria Pro II SB-R80
Then: DJ4 and Reverend Mercalli 5
Then: Reverend Mercalli 5 and SBMM Ray25CA (mod project)

The Rule of two. I can only play one at a time and for whats it's worth, I agree with @bigthemat . The Rev and a backup Rev. I like my mod Project but nothing hits like the Mercalli 5 neck. Nothing.

For the longest time I only had one electric, my old trusty early 80's Ibanez Blazer Bass. I could do most anything with that bass.

If I had to get rid of everything and only keep two, it would probably have to be that Ibanez Blazer Bass and my modded 1979 Rickenbacker 4001. If anything because those are two basses it would be very difficult to ever get again

Yep! If limited to only two, I find a J w flats works well in place of a P w flats. But a P with rounds is a much different beast from a J with rounds.

My Sandberg is #1. I would have to guess my #2 is my newly acquired Fender Pro II 5 string P Bass. But it would be a tough choice. The Sandberg is so good and so versatile that I don't even know if I'd need a #2. But here they are.

I had an MIJ Jazz Special just like that when I was in high school in 1980s Austin. Here’s an embarrassing picture of 16 year old me rocking it on the Austin Stage at the old Aquafest. I was probably playing a Phil Collins song, or maybe Madonna.

Nice bass as I recall. I sold it when I got to college though because I was really into Yamahas and only had space for one.

I bought that new from Bass Central in 2000. It was $350 less than the unlined. Wonderful bass!

That's easy! My 2012 Rickenbacker 4003 and my 2021 Fender Precision. They provide me with every tone I could possibly want for originals and covers. I'm not counting my Squier Jazz piccolo bass for this thought exercise because I don't use it as a traditional bass instrument. Plus, I would never get rid of that one because it's my first ever bass.

I would have just those basses if I sold my other Ric 4003.

Update - I would replace my 2021 Precision with my 2022 Ric 4003. That would leave me with a Ric with rounds and a Ric with flats.
