This is the situation I'm in now, to choose two. I think I'll get complete opposites, Ibanez BTB776PB (wants it) and Sting/'51 Precision (I has it). That covers both ends of the modern to old-school spectrum except it goes a little above $1K.

Musicman Sub-$4-500 on CL
Used Jazz bass $400-500
upgrade pickups/pre on JB, $200.
Or maybe a Used Sterling-$800
and a used Roadster/Roadstar for $200 or so.

I am leaning towards a fretted peavey foundation, a fretless foundation, and $600 worth of rum and pineapple juice.

Well it looks like I'm about to have neither (trading tmw).
The 776 can be found for around 800, or 6-something used.
If I had to go down to only a grand for two basses, I'd go with my own MIM Jazz 4, and an Ibby SR506. If I had a grand for only ONE bass, I'd take a stab in the dark and get a Ibanez BTB 6er..a bass I've never tried out. Either that, or a Yamaha RBXJM 6er...another I've never tried out. Tough choices.

A beat-up Sting Ray 5 and a super clean MIJ P/J.
I can get a used Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass for less than $600. For $200 more I can land a used Squier Fretless Jazz.
New? A Squier CV 60's Jazz and a CV 60's PBass would work for me just fine and in fact will be working for me just fine. Just need to find the right deal on the PBass.

An Ovation Magnum I
and an Ovation Magnum I fretless.
These are both going for $500-700 on CL regularly.
I still love my Stingrays, Sterling and Jazzes. But my Ovation is more "my voice". And there are a lot less bassists rocking these.
