If You Could Only Have Two Basses...

Fender American Deluxe P 5 and a Fender Roscoe Beck 5

Neither are made any more...

so I kinda tried to make my own Fender Am. Deluxe P 5 / Rosco Beck (total cost $850.00) the best of both: the pickups (Bill Lawrence P-46 and a Bill Lawrence design Am P 5 Deluxe bridge pickup) but no Pre amp.

but if I could have em they would be the listed above.....(under $1000.00... yeah right..How about under $3500.00...lol !!)

If I HAD to choose I believe the Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass V X 2 (both modded with ultra lite tuners and different pickups....)

Hmmm...one bass for ~$1000? Fender '62 AVRI Precision. No, '62 Jazz. No, '62 Precision. No, '57 Precision.

Two basses under $1000? Fender Precision Lyte Deluxe and MIM FSR Jazz. (Yet that MIM FSR Precision a few pages back was to die for--you never see those for sale!)

And good luck getting me to unload my CAR Duck Dunn...or Atkinson...just sayin'. :D

Currently what I would want
1) My Ibanez SR600 ($585 brand new, got it ten percent off)
2) A used MIM Precision

This is just because I just bought the Ibby, couldn't imagine ever wanting to get rid of it (still in the honeymoon phase)

The "you can't go wrong with this combo
1) Used MIM P
2) Used MIM J

My more realistic answer (realistic meaning more likely to make me happy in the long run)

Agree as to the MIM P and J. Better yet, find a Japanese Squier P and J from the early '80s in the JV or SQ series, each of which can be had for $500 or maybe a bit less. These Squiers bear little resemblance to today's cheaper models.

Well, first of all, no one makes anything new (left handed) that I would buy, that I could get 2 of for $1K. So, I would have to pick from what I already have, and there are several workable combinations, including a few with 3 basses for under a grand. Here they are:

- '78 Fender P-bass ($500); my first bass, but don't play it much any more. Has the bridge cover and foam mute on it; maybe that's why.

-Carvin LB-20 ($400); apparently never played, stole it on the 'Bay. Someone's lefty Rick substitute (and it's close!).

- Kramer Forum III ($349); very nice metal thrash machine.

-Kramer "The Duke" ($500) Aluminum necked Kramer- 'nuff said.

- Eastwood Magnum ($579); 'cause Ovation never made lefties.

- 90's Korean Danelectro DC Pro ($325); again, no lefty originals, and lots of fun to play.

- Korean Rogue VB-100 violin bass ($129); makes a Hofner look drab, and sounds a whole lot better than you'd expect.

If I was forced to choose, it would probably be the Dano, the Carvin and the Rogue; but I'd sure miss the others.:crying:

More than likely, threads like these have been beat to death, but...!

If you could only have two basses and the total cost of both of them was less than $1,000, which would you pick?
(Go no further than the above line if you don't care about some kid's incessant rambling at 2 am. It's really quite dull.)

Yes, a limit of one grand. This thread is just out of my sheer curiosity.
I have two basses, totaling a value of roughly $800 (give or take). One I'm pretty happy with, one...not as much.

Why two though? Why not put all the money in one bass?
Well in my situation, one of my basses is a passive four string jazz, the other an active five string. And I enjoy some variety.
It's like only having one girlfriend. But in that case I guess you could do with more then two as well eh?
(I wouldn't know about that...)
*Ahem* ANYWAYS...

Why not more than two? Well when you divide $800 (or even $1,000) three (+) ways, you're going to end up with some interesting instruments
and I can't justify putting more than about $1,000 into basses (at the age of 18 anyways).
It's like having a ton of girlfriends. They're all cheap.
(I definitely wouldn't know about that.)
Moving on,
I know there might be some [DEL]gear snobs[/DEL] sirs who may feel the need to chime in with their opinions on "cheap" basses (or girlfriends),
but I would love it if you cared enough just to post which two and why.

For me, I think (I emphasize "think" because I haven't played every bass I would like to, but from what I do know)
I would pick an older MIA Jazz Deluxe 5 and an older MIM P bass. But I don't know if I could swing that combo for < $1,000. Maybe if I got lucky...

So, long original post for no real reason I guess, other than I don't want to do my homework. But by all means...have at the question if you care to!

Probably my Alembic Persuader and my Squier Mike Dirnt.
