Squier is backed by Fender, so they say. Do they come from the same company? I'm just curious on what the popular opinion is.

If you have a Squier do you have a Fender?

A Squier is not considered a Fender, otherwise people wouldn't make faux-Fenders by sticking Fender decals on Squier headstocks!
According to Fender and their legal dept,anything that they make or liscence to make
under any brand that Fender owns as a corporate entity is considered by them to be
their product, and hence a Fender product. As for Squier it is a Fender liscenced brand
and Fender says it is their product no matter where they contract the line to be made.
This is what I remember reading in a Bass Player Magazine article where Fender adressed
the issue of their brands and product lines.

yeah, legally it can be considered made by fender, it is also squier made by fender
but if anyone comes to me with a squier and says: "look I have a fender" I'd be inclined to disagree

+1, I conisider Squiers to be Fenders since they made by Fender and featured on Fender's website.
And some Squiers are better than some Fenders. 
I know my late 80's MIJ E series Squier is better than a lot of MIM Fenders I've played.

Last time I checked... any of them were made to produce music. And when listening you have no clue what logo's on the headstock. (not video... )

I'm a Fender owner myself and I'd stated Fender's position in
my earlier post. I myself am aware of the general perceptions
of players including myself, that Squiers aren't as high up on
the perceived quality scale as the MIM or MIJ or MIA bonafide
Fender branded products. It still doesn't change the fact that
it is a Fender product, but it's a product from their main budget
brand and line. In that regard it's not a Fender per se'; much like
a Chevy is not a Cadillac, but both are still products of GM.

But it doesn't say "Mercury by Ford" like "Squier by Fender."
Some people don't consider MIM/MIK/CIJ products to be real Fenders. It's all about perception anyway.
It really pisses me off when people say "dude i went to GC and picked up a fender strat for $300!!" and I'm like sweet! so i go over to their house to see the beast, and its a squier, so no, its not a fender
