*IF* the P-bass requirement of this hypothetical situation can be filled by my G&L L-1000 (which *I* think should count cuz it was Leo’s final take on his P-bass design), then I think I could have some sort of very high quality, modern, 5 string, active/passive, J style or dual humbucker with coil splits type of bass as the 2nd instrument.

My latest obsession for future acquisition is a Skjold Slayer or something of that ilk!

See picture at left of screen. Custom build by Scott Bremner in Australia. Nordstrand Big Splits & Bartolini Preamp that I almost never use. It sounds great passive so that’s what I go with mostly.

Thanks for the replies so far! The P is a bit tongue-in-cheek because it's so ubiquitous. I included it because I'm curious how many P players would make #2 a J, while how many might pick something else like a modern active 5er, an EBMM, a Ric, a Spector, etc.

My #1 was a Lakland 55-94 for many years, then it became #2 when the P bass arrived. I'd buy another Lakland if I could find a lightweight one. Wow! 3 basses. . . . that's a collection for me!!

Man these threads make me laugh. All the P bass hate, yet you look around, hardly any decent P's for sale anywhere. Walk into a studio and the first thing you hear? "Can you ditch the hypersonic, fibre optic 11 string thing you brung"....we'll run a P on these tracks, its just easier for everyone and it'll sound grt"

If one is a P, then that P should be a 2002 Fender American Deluxe P (the one with the additional bridge humbucker) in cherry sunburst with rosewood board. The other is the J from that same series. That said, I have that mentioned J, but not the P. I have four other basses, and while I complained about the two Gibson basses (Q80 and RD Artist) in the past, I like them now. My Hamer Chaparral Bass is a nice blend of Fender and Gibson and a fantastic bass. the last one is another Am Deluxe J as a fretless.

It can also be a sign that the engineer knows his job and is going to get you, the record and the guy paying for the session, a great bass sound.
