Dude, how can they know what's in your mind?????? That makes no sense! By the way, someone who feels as though they are being disrespected easily and someone who gets offended easily are exactly the same. There's no difference at all.

So, OK, what's YOUR solution? Should they....
a) Check everyone BUT YOU?
b) Check no one and just let theft continue?
c) Check only people who look like they have theft ON THEIR MINDS?

What would YOU do if you owned a store?

My thing is don't ask to check my bag or any bodies bag. How can the store be respecting a customer when at the same time they have assumed that simply because a person has come in with a bag that they come in to steal.




If I had a store I wouldn't treat people like they've come into my store to steal.

I'm not sure what the big deal is about being "offended" by this..? Being offended doesn't necessarily mean that one's going to turn it into a personal to-the-death crusade, it may just be something that leaves a bad taste in one's mouth. I don't like having to check my bags/backpack/whatever in. It makes me feel like I'm being assumed to be a shoplifter. I'm not, therefore It's annoying regardless of the reason why they do it.
So?
It's not something I sit there and carefully decide to be offended over though, I just am. If I feel strongly enough, I walk out. If on the other hand the store is cool about it - they ask nicely, they explain themselves, in other words they choose to treat me like a person being affected by a policy rather than a potential criminal in to lift stuff from them, I'm much more willing to comply.

My opinion is that it's a silly thing to be offended by, in the great scheme of things. It is highly unlikely that clerk asking you to check your bag is secretly imagining what an awful, awful, sneak thief you are and getting all tingly in the the dangly bits about taking your bag and depriving you of any ill-gotten gains.

yep. I can respect that and I see where you're coming from. In the grand scheme it ain't nuttin, still I happen to find it annoying to be suspected a thief and have to leave my personal property with someone because of it. I just don't like it is all.

The stores only go off of PAST EXPERIENCES. They have seen it too many times. I worked at a store where a woman who was skinny dressed up like a fat woman with a very complicated rig under her huge coat. She stole TELEVISIONS. And this was BEFORE flat screens. If I owned a store, I would not let ANYONE come in with a backpack. For that matter, no one with a coat on in the dead of summer would make it past the front counter. Unfortunately, when protecting our assets, we have to cater to the lowest common denominator.

OP, does having door locks on your house and car show disrespect to your neighbors? Aren't you assuming someone near you is going to waltz into your house or throw open the door of your car and steal something? Of course you are, or you wouldn't lock your doors.

Right, I can see the point.
But - I happen to NOT be a person who would steal a television, ipod, mouthwash, dog food or vibrators. Therefore, it kind of irks me that I would assumed to be someone who would. I'm not sure why that's so hard to understand? Again, it's not a personal crusade or something that I'm going to shout out against from the tallest rooftop, just something that irks me. I'm flattered that my opinion means so much to you though, thanks!

Please, I am not at all the easily offended type. It comes down to respect. Do not ask me to check my bag, doing so is insinuating that I have entered the store to do something that is not even my mind.

My thing is you want my money but you assume that I come to steal. Not kool at all.

It's not about you. It's about the people who do come to steal.

Don't be upset at the clerk who takes your backpack. They probably are uncomfortable asking for it in the first place. Find the person who created the policy and let them know you are unhappy and feel like a criminal.

As for how I feel? I don't carry a backpack around, so I can't relate. When I go to a store with that policy, I assume there have been problems in the past with theft so they need to protect themselves or maybe they are worried about an act of violence/terrorism. If they only ask young folks or a certain race for their bags, then those folks would cry discrimination.

Honestly, I'm not the thieving type so it doesn't bother me one bit. I don't walk away from the security line at the airport cursing the TSA agents for assuming I was going to blow up a plane. I just don't think that way. Security measures are in place to catch the bad people. I'm not one of them, so no worries for me.

No, detaining your personal property is not the same action as watching to see if someone shoplifts.

No. I personally don't think so. In regards to a camera, I'm simply being "watched", no problem. In regards to the bag/backpack concept, I'm being asked to surrender my personal property to a stranger, which I don't necessarily like doing, because I'm suspected of being a potential shoplifter.
They're both shoplifting prevention strategies, yep, but I don't like having to surrender my property. It feels a lot more...what's the word...invasive, or personal..simply because it's my personal belonging(s) that they're confiscating. Not sure if that makes sense
