How can the store be respecting a customer when at the same time they have assumed that simply because a person has come in with a bag that they come in to steal.
If I had a store I wouldn't treat people like they've come into my store to steal.
What you're effectively saying is all stores should have security staff. I think being followed sends you a bit of a message, whereas checking bags makes no accusation of any individual.
If you then object to being followed about the store you're objecting to store security period. Since you clearly wish to be held above suspicion you can't not object to being followed.
