It's psychological I guess. Having to open my backpack for them to gawk at what's in it feels like an invasion of my privacy. Again, I know why they do it, I just don't like it.

Well, that's the solution that I tend to practice to be honest. I just tend to avoid wearing a backpack, or carrying a bag from another store etc etc when I go into a place where I know they do this. Not worth the trouble really.

I agree 100% here. I'm fine with it. If it reduces shoplifting it's possible that it reduces my consumer costs in the store. It can benefit me in the long run. Plus, if you do it for one you must do it for all...

It's only happened to me once, and I had no problem with it, I knew their reasons and understood. I just made sure where they were gonna put it, and made sure they knew that I would hold them responsible if something happened to it.

If the store has a policy and applies it consistently, then I don't have a problem. If the store seems to be profiling, then I'm not going to be too happy and I will avoid the store at all possible in the future.

I remember I bought a computer from Wal-Mart a few years ago. It wasn't an overly expensive machine, but it was still locked down with one of those grey alarm devices. I had to have the person at the electronics department unlock it, after which, he promptly took it to the register to ring me out. I assume this is standard store protocol for something like that. However, I still had to present my receipt to the person at the front door. :rollno:

They respect you a lot.

They assume that you are an intelligent person and as such, are able to realize that people don't always come to stores with the best intentions and that there is no way for shop owners to know yours.

They expect you to understand that leaving your bag at the counter or having it inspected is an efficient way to keep shoplifting down and as such, ultimately allows them to give you a safer buyer experience and lower prices.

It is a lot to ask from a customer, they know it and yet expect people to understand it rather than go whining about it on the Interwebz.

You would after a few months, when you realize how badly shoplifting cripples your marging and how much customers prefer a safe store with no strange people wandering around all day long, even at the cost of bag inspection.

Why even carry/wear a backpack?
Well a good example would be shopping in the city. We sometimes go to Philly or NYC and go from store to store. In that case, you sorta need a backpack or the wife's massively over-sized hand bag to lug stuff around. In that instance it's hard to leave a bag home. Then you have to check it in, store after store and so on. Kind of gets frustrating.

That's the problem with tb, can't have a mature conversation. None of us have to agree but calling names is some other bs that seems to work fo some members here.

How would you like it if I called you a jerk for not having enough common sense to know that there is nothing wrong with a person carrying a backpack/bag

For the record what I carrying is a book bag( I made a mistake when I refereed to it as a backpack).

That's not the store's problem, now is it? :hmm:

The replies in this thread bring joyous lulz that you're somehow oppressed because you have to "check in" your bag. But hey, it's not your $$/merchandise getting stolen so what do you care? amirite? iamrite. :cool:

haha nice turn-around!

I tend to disagree though.. back in my younger day I worked evenings at a retail store. K-Mart... Trust me when I tell you that most of our clientele were viewed as money-bearing cattle...not the nicest thing but it is what it is. Maybe other stores are different, I dunno. I only had experience with just that one.

people here don't shop with backpacks because we're not weird, i guess...? :eyebrow: but, it's well known that 98% of all shoplifting occurs outside the store. so i can see why you're upset and feel "violated".

Oh brother, here we go..there's always one in the bunch... why do you have to get snotty like that? Does my opinion mean that much to you? Thanks, I'm flattered..

1- I don't feel "oppressed" where did you get that from? I simply stated that I don't like it. For me to feel "oppressed" it would have to be a whole lot worse than that. Do I need to type slower or something for you to understand? :p

2- no, not my merch being stolen. I hate thieves. But..I'm not one and don't like being treated as though I am. As I said over and again (and apparently you missed it?) it's not a big deal to me, just something I don't like.

as mentioned, in urban environments it is quite commonplace to carry a bag of some sorts...it is even common in suburban places for those who use public transportation or walk/cycle...nothing out of the ordinary at all...no need for the personal animosity :)
