Do bands like this actually make money? I'm asking because I don't know! It does seem that these kids can all play their instruments well but why bust your ass to become an accomplished musician and then aspire to play.....uhh.........whatever that was?!?! Oh, and for what it's worth, I could barely hear the bassist anyway.

2. Sometimes. Sometimes the parents arent in the picture and thats why the music isnt so happy. I dont know what the case is here.

3. I've always thought he was a killer drummer.

They make enough money to keep on playing and touring regularly, but not much money really. Im sure they all have full time jobs they return to when not touring. They bust their asses to become accomplished musicians so they can play that, because that is what they feel. Its what they want to play. They could probably play some MTV friendly music and make much more money, but then they wouldnt be doing what they want.

My guitarist put it well.

His boss was asking him why he plays dirty sloppy punk rock instead of something he could get famous and make money off of so that he didnt have to work a crappy telemarketing job.

My guitarist responded by saying that his music is like his baby. He asked his boss if he would put one of his kids on the street as a prostitute to make more money when he could get by fine without doing that.

I've been to the ottobar many times. I live in Phoenix now and the scene is very weak. Thats the only thing I miss about DC and Baltimore. I met my wife at Fletchers, watching sick of it all. If you look at the jesus eater video on pheer, I am in it constantly dancing. They opened for darkest hour that night. Anyway, like the locust or not, they are talented musicians. They opened for dillinger escape plan here recently. They cant match the intensity of dillinger, but they get much props. They have toured all over the world, japan, europe, ect... You guys should check out thier song titles. Pretty unique. Later Joe

Sorry but he's not what I would call a talented bassist. Still cool music though. I kinda see that stuff as the rock music extension of what Schoenberg was to art music. The breakdown of traditional harmony allows a range of emotions not possible otherwise.

And if you think that band would sound good with "normal" vocals you're nuts. If someone was up there crooning like Bon Jovi it would be ridiculous.

All subjective comments aside, the drummer's double kick pedal is what gives you the impression the bassist is fast. He's mostly playing eighths to the drummer's sixteenths. Also note that he's using a delay pedal, which can make things sound much faster than they are.

Didn't do much for me. I've seen so many bands that sound like that over the last twenty years. It's a popular wheel for reinventing. Mike Watt would have those guys on toast back in the Minutemen days.

A true metal bassist is Martin Mendez. Played for a Amon Amarth a crazy black metal band. And is currently playing for a death metal band Opeth. Ive seen Opeth live, he was amazingly fast and the lead singer Mike even boosted he was as fast as Malmsteen. And hes a finger player.

I was at a locust show once and i was sitting on a couch and kept nodding off. Their drummer is pretty good though, he teaches lesson in San Diego, at least ive seen flyers hes put up.

The whole fast argument... yeah if fast is your goal, you could train a monkey to slam on a bass really fast, that doesn't make him talented. Check out "Times Up" by Living Colour, that's fast fingerstyle that isn't just a mess of notes. Or even some Stanley Clarke, when he's not slapping, he can shred fingerstyle. The trick is to play fast and with clarity.
