and i need a decent quality bass and amp that will cost 550$ or less. I will be playing bass for a hardcore, screamo, rock band. what should i get?

seriosly though I would recommend a Peavey millennium for the bass as it's probably one of the best bang for your buck basses out there. For the amp, if you want cheap power get behringer, if you want cheap power but better quality get a used combo amp for around 150$. At this price you can probably get something running 150watts which is enough for a band setting later on.I personally don't recommend the small combos as they're great for solo learning and nice and portable but lack the power to keep up with drums later on in your playing. For the same price or a little bit more you can get a good used combo amp thats still fairly portable and useful in most situations.

+1 on the Ampeg BA-115. They sound good and are pretty loud. Live you are usually going through a house PA so you don't need a huge rig, at least not as a beginner.
+1 on Yamaha (though I'm not familiar with the models). Your budget is a bit "tight" to get both a good bass and an good amp. In the low end, it is easy to get a bass that won't give you nice low "action" (string-height) without buzzing. Yamaha seems to be doing a good job in the low-end basses providing good fretwork. Ibanez too, last I checked.
Don't get too carried away with all the various bass features. For quality in the low-end, "less is more". The most expensive part of the bass is the fretwork due to the labor involved in getting it right; everything else is pretty much just "manufactured" (automated). I suggest doing some searches on fretwork (setup, relief, low action, fret-buzz, etc.). Since you're new, it would be easy to buy a bass that will never play well (bad action). Before you buy, visit the setup forum here on TB and learn enough about setup so that you can make sure your new bass neck is OK before the 30-day return period offered by most places expires.
